USPSA President Michael Voigt Takes Area 1 Open Title

Sedro-Woolley, WA — They may not have played ‘Hail to the Chief’ but there was no mistaking when the President of the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA), Michael Voigt, stepped onto the range and captured the Open Division title at the Area 1 Championships held June 26-29 in Sherwood, Oregon.

For much of the match Voigt, who shoots for gun maker STI International, played the role of stalking horse, holding down second place as Joe Bridgman of San Diego, California and Matt McLearn of Payson, Arizona swapped the lead back and forth. Then on the eighth stage, Voigt made his move winning that stage and taking the lead. Through the final four stages Voigt held his lead against late challenges from Bridgman and McLearn who finished second and third respectively.

“Besides being the USPSA President, Michael is one of the top shooters in the nation. While I’m sure several shooters would prefer that Michael sit behind a desk where he’s no threat to win a title, we were certainly glad to have him attend our match and congratulate him on winning the Open title in a very competitive field of shooters,” said Bruce Gary, USPSA’s Area 1 Director.

Rounding out the top five in the Open Division were defending Area 1 Open Champion Glenn Higdon of Peyton, Colorado and David Re of Pflugerville, Texas. All five top shooters are ranked as Grand Masters, the highest rank a shooter can attain in the sport of Practical Shooting.

The USPSA Area 1 Championships were held at the Tri-County Gun Club in Sherwood, Oregon. A total of 300 top shooters competed in USPSA’s Open, Limited, Limited-10, Production, Revolver and Single Stack divisions. The USPSA Area 1 region includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming but competitors from Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas, Virginia and British Columbia, Canada attended.
