there was a thread not to long ago regarding ups no longer accepting firearms to ship out for repair or factory service, one now had to use fedex as our only means of transport.

i was at ups in chelmsford this morning sending a package and asked the woman who i assumed was the counter manager or lead person (i assume this because when one of the employees has an issue, this woman is the go to person to sort things out) if what i was hearing was correct..."ups will no longer ship firearms, that fedex is our only option now. is this true?"

her answer was, they still shipped firearms, nothing has changed, same rules apply, we're happy to do it for you.

alright then, good enough for me. btw, as most of you know, it has to be a real ups operated facility, not a ups mail stop.

A ups hub will ship next day or second day. They hit me $32 for second shipping a p226. That includes insurance.

I've shipped several firearms (long guns and handguns) through the hub in Chelmsford, one as recently as a couple of months ago with ZERO issues. They've helped me package a couple, going so far as to actually "make" boxes and packing material, can't possibly say enough nice things about the ladies there!

UPS "stores" are generally franchise/private operations and have their own rules. I don't bother with them for anything.

Wow, you were lucky....I just got hit with the 'lowest price' of $76. He said, 'if it was a long gun, It would be much cheaper'; <- Thanks, Captain Obvious!

As I understand it, UPS will ship Handguns via NEXT DAY only.

If there is a location that will do 2nd Day, that is great !

BTW, Overnight is NOT the Law. It's only policy.

Shipping Firearms or Ammunition

Special Procedures for Shipping Firearms
UPS accepts packages containing firearms (as defined by Title 18, Chapter 44, and Title 26, Chapter 53 of the United States Code) for transportation only (a) between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, and licensed collectors (as defined in Title 18, Chapter 44 of the United States Code), and government agencies and (b) where not otherwise prohibited by federal, state or local law (i) from an individual to a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector; and (ii) from a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to an individual.

The shipper must comply with and must ensure that each shipment containing firearms complies with all federal, state and local laws applicable to the shipper, recipient, and package, including, without limitation, age restrictions.

Use These UPS Services for Your Firearm Shipment
Handguns, as defined by 18 U.S.C. § 921, will be accepted for transportation only via UPS Next Day Air Services, specifically, UPS Next Day Air[emoji768] Early A.M.[emoji768], UPS Next Day Air[emoji768], and UPS Next Day Air Saver[emoji768]. (Note: UPS Express Critical[emoji769] Service is not available for firearms).

UPS accepts firearm parts for shipment, provided the part is not a "firearm" as defined under federal law; the contents of the package cannot be assembled to form a firearm; and the package otherwise complies with federal, state, and local law. (Note: Receivers or frames of a firearm and firearm mufflers/silencers (also referred to as suppressors) are considered "firearms" and are accepted for transportation only if shipped in accordance with UPS's requirements for shipping firearms.)

UPS does not accept automatic weapons, including machine guns, for shipment. Firearms (including handguns) and firearm parts are not accepted for shipment internationally. UPS Returns[emoji768] Services are not available for packages containing firearms.

Packing and Labeling Requirements for Firearms
All firearms must be shipped in new corrugated packaging which meets the UPS Single Wall Box Strength Guidelines.

All firearms are to be packaged in accordance with UPS Packaging Guideline Specifications. Ammunition must be shipped separately from packages that contain firearms (including handguns).

Packages containing handguns must be separated from other packages tendered to UPS for delivery.

The shipper must use Delivery Confirmation Adult Signature Required service for each package containing a firearm, including a handgun or a firearm suppressor, and affix a UPS label requesting an adult signature upon delivery.

The labeling and outer box markings on all firearms shipments should not identify the contents as containing a firearm. Labeling, including the shipper's and consignee's abbreviated names on the shipping label or air shipping document, must be non-descriptive.

Getting Your Firearm Shipment to UPS
Firearms (including handguns) may be shipped only through a UPS Scheduled Pickup Account (specifically, Daily Pickup, Daily On-Route Pickup, UPS Smart Pickup[emoji768], and Day-Specific Pickup), or through a UPS Customer Center (counters at UPS operational facilities). Note: Firearms (including handguns) are not accepted for shipment via UPS Drop Boxes or UPS On-Call Pickup[emoji768], and may not be tendered to or dropped off at locations of The UPS Store[emoji768], any third party retailer, or any UPS Access Point[emoji769] location.

When you are shipping a package that contains a handgun, you must verbally notify the UPS driver or UPS Customer Center clerk.

See the UPS Tariff/Terms and Conditions of Service - United States and the UPS Rate and Service Guide in effect at the time of shipping ("UPS Terms") for information regarding firearm and ammunition shipments.

Special Procedures for Shipping Ammunition
UPS accepts for transportation such ammunition as constitutes "cartridges, small arms," as defined in 49 C.F.R. § 173.59. All other allowable ammunition shipments are accepted only on a contractual basis, and must be prepared under the rules for a fully regulated hazardous material. Ammunition cannot be shipped where it exceeds 12.7 mm (50 caliber or 0.5 inch) for rifles or handguns or 8 gauge for shotguns. The package may not exceed 66 lb. (30 kg).

The shipper must comply with and must ensure that each shipment containing ammunition complies with all federal, state and local laws applicable to the shipper, recipient, and package, including, without limitation, age restrictions.

Use These UPS Services for Your Ammunition Shipment
In order to meet the exception for "Limited Quantities" shipments or ORM-D materials, which are not subject to the shipping paper requirements of subpart C of part 172 of 49 CFR, ammunition can only be shipped via UPS Ground, and only within the 48 contiguous United States, or via UPS Ground Intra-Oahu and Intra-Alaska. Shipments of ammunition with other UPS services must be prepared as a fully regulated hazardous material and are available only on a contractual basis.

Ammunition is not accepted for shipment internationally.

Packing and Labeling Requirements for Ammunition
All ammunition must be shipped in new corrugated packaging which meets the UPS Single Wall Box Strength Guidelines. Ammunition must be packed with internal boxes or partitioning or in metal clips. The internal boxes, partitions or clips must fit snugly into the external packaging that is securely closed so that it cannot open during transportation.

Ammunition will be transported only when packaged and labeled in compliance with 49 C.F.R. Part 172, et seq. regarding hazardous materials shipments, and must be shipped in accordance with the UPS Guide for Shipping Ground and Air Hazardous Materials.

For additional information regarding packaging and labeling requirements, refer to "How to Ship Ammunition (Cartridges, Small Arms)," at the link below, or contact UPS.

Heh heh.... ship it in a BIG box......

Lol, yeah, if there is a next time! [wink]

BTW, Overnight is NOT the Law. It's only policy.

Chelmsford Customer Center- packaged and followed all rules; almost got stuck paying for Saturday delivery (would have been $100++; since I mailed it on Friday)- some calls were made, they accepted the package for Monday delivery at the bargain price of $76. Lesson learned.

Fedex is similar to UPS in that you can't ship from a FedEx store (like Burlington) or a Kinkos. When I shipped a firearm FedEx (only a few months ago) I had to go to Wilmington.

An FFL-07 (dealer) can ship Handguns via USPS Priority Mail (very cheap).

They have to fill out the USPS Form 1058 and hand the package to a live Mail Carrier.

I would have to check my paperwork but I am fairly certain I shipped 2 day with Fedex.
I purchased a couple of guns from my cousin in FL and the shipping is overnight and around $80. Add in the FFL fee to pickup the gun and it's almost the same as buying it here. The good part is it does not have to go to a gunsmith for a trigger job.

FFL-07 don't make a lot of margin on any firearm.

Why are they so reluctant to ship Handguns via Priority Mail for a fair fee ?

Can the paper work be so much more involved than simply selling a Handgun ?

I don't think the post office even wants to handle fire arms shipping. Got to be a lot of federal regulations involved. I don't know if I could trust them with a firearm, they have trouble with a piece of mail. I'm always going down the street to give my neighbor a letter or two left in my mail box.

I've had just as much mis-delivered mail with UPS as USPS.
