[grin]Got a friend who wants to build an AR, he wants to use a 7.62x39 because the rounds are cheaper. Does anyone here have any experience with these uppers and can they be mated with a 223 lower or is it like the AR10 lower I have coped his e-mail below and any help you can send me would be great. I have only built and shot 223 for highpower competition.

I'm thinking of building an AR now that prices have normalized, and since you know way more than me about them, I figure I'd ask you. In order to be AWB compliant in CT: No flash hider or bayonet lug, am I missing anything else? I'm thinking of going with a 7.62x39 upper so I can shoot cheap.

Some of my questions to him were
Are you ever planning on shooting in any high power competitions?
Does the 7.62x39 upper the same lower as the .223?
How much cheaper is the 7.62x39 per 1000 compared to .223.
.223 is reloadable and you have friends who can help you out with that.(me)

They mate on regular AR15 lowers (not an AR10 lower).
I thought about getting one, but it looks tough to find good magazines for them.
I don't know anything about Model 1 sales, but the price looks good.

I'd steer him towards a .223 or 5.56x45 upper. Yeah, the ammo is a little more expensive (unless you reload), but a good .223 upper will have superior accuracy, range, and magazine capacity. The only way to get a 7.62x39 round out to 600 yards is to run about 400 yards, then fire. [smile]

I've got a 7.62 model one upper on a Spikes 5.56 lower.
I have used both FMJ and the cheap wolf stuff; both have worked with no
feed failures using C Products 7.62 mags (10 rounds, Mass you know).

Over at Arfcom, some members have used standard
5.56 mags with success provided they loaded no more than 7 rounds.

As others have said, accuracy is not the greatest. Shooting out to 100 yards, I have
achieved about 4" groups, not nearly as good as I can do with a 5.56 upper, but since
I have only shot about 75 rounds, I don't think it's really broken in yet. YMMV.

As long as the mods don't mind, here some good info on the subject from Arfcom:

As far a cheaper ammo ?
Cheap wolf ammo 5.56/223 is the same price as 7.62x39- unless you buy older corrosive surplus ammo
Even cheaper is the 5.45x39 russian round about 200ish 1000 rounds
Even cheaper still 22 cal upper and ammo Walmart federal 550 packs 15.00 5k rounds 140ish.
