GOAL's BoD meeting is tomorrow, 11/10 at, I BELIEVE 6:30?

Can someone verify the time?

IF you're at all unhappy with some of the shenanigans going on and want to express your concern with the direction the BoD is leading the organization in you do have the right to let them know.

I'm NOT advocating disrupting their meeting.

I, for one, am planning on asking their intent with respect to the Outdoor Message issue. That news letter that costs 1/3 of their budget to run? Remember that? I also plan on asking them if they're going to be releasing financial info for 2010 - which they haven't & if they're planning on releasing it for 2011 - as they're required to by their own charter.

Update posted - read on.

Is anyone besides Bob going? We need some support there to force the board's hand at showing the financials.

Isn't it a legal requirement for them to disclose their financials?

I've been to every meeting since Bob brought up these many concerns & I'll be at this one too.

It would be great if more NES'rs took some time to show up to at least one of these things. I know everyone's got better things to do on a Thursday night. You can bet I do. But nothing is going to change unless people get involved.

Thank you for making an appearance, some of the members of the BOD are hoping by ignoring us the problem will go away.

Wish i could make it but its my third night in the truck/ on the job and i couldn't get the time off. Please post how it goes, godspeed.

Is the time 6:30? I could possibly make it if I could strapped some JATO bottles to the back of my camry to get to Northboro from Cambridge in 30 minutes. [laugh]

Another post I read elsewhere on the board says they all start at 7.... not sure if there is any truth to that. If they start at 7 I will peel rubber out of here to make it in time.

Good luck...I'm taking a class thats running on Thursday nights until mid December. It's a condensed class and missing one could mean not being able to pass the final test. I'll try to make one after the end of the class. SO, give 'em hell boys!

So what went down?

I'll let Bob and the others give the report. I will say there was a lot of honesty at the meeting and believe we will soon see changes. I only spoke briefly.

I plan on attending more meeting and hope you do as well. It doesn't take long to figure out whats going on.

Thanks to you and the others that took the time to attend. Getting the GOAL ship back on course is imperative.

We attended the meeting today - thanks to Mike for coming! BBQ and Cekim too.

Most productive BoD meeting yet from my perspective. There seems to be some serious agreement in the majority of the BoD that GOAL needs to a) adopt a larger web presence and b) eliminate/downscale the print version of TOM.

With respect to the financial questions their Lawyer advised they're finalizing a statement that should be ready soon. I believed him.

Obviously there will be a lot of issues moving forward to ensure that members who still wish to get some kind of print version of TOM will have the option to do so. Those are details and will be worked out. The important thing was a definitive statement that GOAL needs to move into the 21st Century.

I don't know if arriving Code 1 in an ambulance would do it, although I do have the AED we could try to shock different things. LOL, jk it doesn't work like that.

Once again thank each one of you for attending putting your time in to this effort for all of us that cannot.
I am glad to see progress in one form or another and look forward to hearing more.

Thank you to those who were able to attend last night and especially to Bob for your pursuit of this issue and your commitment to updating us. I'm glad to see that it looks like progress is being made.

The Outdoor Message issue, while important, is a symptom, not a cause of the problems.

GOAL is a worthwhile organization that needs to update the level of professionalism with which it handles organizational governance; conflict of interest; financial dealings with "friends of the organization", etc. The org is too large, and too well established, to still deal at the level of "we hire friends to funnel money to them since they have done good for us in the past", and to "count the ballots in the back room since everyone should trust us".

As a start, especially given what could be a controversial election, would be to arrange for an independently verifiable election - either run by a CPA firm, or with a panel of outside observers who audit the process from the opening of ballots to the final count. Having staff with a vested outcome count the ballots in a facility where the incumbents can exert influence that outsiders cannot, does not count as "independent", and will make it difficult for a "pro-status-quo" outcome to be above suspicion. It's not about trust, but about proper business procedure.

I'm on the board of a membership based non-profit, and some people have actually proposed a system that would allow me to manage the ballot counting since it would save the org some $$. I will vigorously oppose any such action, and it's not because I don't trust myself - but I have no right to ask 20K people to trust me, or establish a process that requires that I trust my successor. GOAL should adopt a similar position.
