BOSTON, May 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Massachusetts Million Mom March Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the New England Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence joined a national coalition of gun safety groups and mayors of several American cities today to call for an end to the business of illegal gun trafficking, in our state and around the nation.

The lethal business of gun trafficking moves guns from legal manufacturers to licensed dealers, and then, too often, to sales to prohibited buyers, converting them to illegal guns. These illegally sold guns hit the streets at an alarming rate, accounting for five out six guns recovered in crimes. It is estimated that 60 percent of Massachusetts crime guns are trafficked in from surrounding states with weaker gun laws. (BATFE 2000)

"Under Maine state law, there is no requirement for licensing, registration, or a waiting period before you purchase a gun. Maine also allows the unregulated private sales of guns. These private sales take place with no background checks, no records kept, no questions asked. The only paperwork required is cash," said Cathie Whittenburg, executive director of Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence.

Federally licensed gun dealers who knowingly sell guns to straw buyers (accomplices who stand in for prohibited purchasers), or fail to report stolen guns, are responsible for 57 percent of guns recovered in crimes, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE 1998). These illegal guns end up in the hands of criminals, youth, and violent actors who use them to injure, maim and kill Americans at an escalating pace.

"A year ago, I said 'we have to stop this new wave of violence wiping out a generation,' but it's only gotten worse. Clearly we have to do more to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them. Who's arming our children? Where are the guns coming from?" asked Pastor Bruce Wall of the Global Ministries Christian Church in Dorchester, Mass. "It's like the parable of the babies in the river, floating downstream, more and more of them as the minutes tick by. We can choose to stay at the riverbank and keep our heads down and pluck one baby out at a time. Or, we can make the bold move of going upstream to stop whoever's throwing those babies in the river in the first place. I say, let's go upstream and stop those who are supplying illegal guns and profiting by the blood they spill on our streets."

In a bold move to stem the flow of illegal guns into New York City, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced on Monday, May 15 the filing of a federal lawsuit against 15 rogue dealers. The lawsuit alleges that a number of gun dealers willingly sold guns to straw purchasers and that these guns resulted in crimes committed against New York City residents. The filing of the lawsuit follows a promise by Mayors Bloomberg and Menino to cross state borders to halt the flow of illegal guns.

Illegal gun trafficking is big business for gun manufacturers, distributors and dealers, with an estimated 20 percent of total sales coming from illegally sold handguns.

Yet, up to now, little has been done to prosecute dealers who engage in illegal gun trafficking, or to keep illegal handguns from reaching the streets. The BATFE's enforcement power has been whittled away in recent years, and officials in Congress and the White House are unwilling to take deliberate measures to stem the flow of illegal guns.

"Only two states have a law against the interstate trafficking of firearms, 28 states have no law against lying on the firearm purchase background check form, and 33 states do not require firearm dealers to obtain a state license or register with state authorities. In light of the small number of federal prosecutions that target interstate gunrunning and other offenses, most federal firearm crimes are not being enforced. Thus, guns are available to felons and they appear to be using them to commit more homicides with firearms," stated Joe Vince, a former chief of the Crime Gun Analysis Branch at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms who now serves as a firearms-related violent crime expert for the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Gun violence victims and survivors, faith leaders, and public safety advocates have come together to form a new coalition, Massachusetts Against Trafficking Handguns (M.A.T.H.), to shut down the business of illegal gun trafficking in our state. The coalition will launch a campaign that seeks to answer the question, "Where did the gun come from?" and urge the media and law enforcement to make this question part of every crime investigation in which a gun was used. There will be a media roundtable directly following the press conference to encourage journalists to follow the gun, and track it back to its source, whenever they cover a shooting.

Last time I checked, all of this is a Federal Offense and a Felony. Regulating agencies being the FBI and BATFE. Sounds like this BOZO just admitted to being a Dud.

I wonder how big the ass has to be to keep pulling shit like this out of it?

What's funny about that quote Adam is the constant use of the work Illegal.

Hence, it already is Illegal.

So what??? Who cares. If someone sells to someone that they aren't supposed to sell them too, then they are breaking the law. IT'S ALREADY A FREAKING LAW!!!

If you make a law that to address anything in the above quote, the people that are willing to break the law ARE STILL GOING TO BREAK THE LAW!!!

More laws servre nothing more than to make more laws for the criminal to break. Which is more counts of something that they aren't willing to enforce in the first place.

ONLY BECAUSE HE DOESN'T WANT TO PUT THE F**KING COPS ON THE STREET TO CATCH THESE PEOPLE!!!

God shit like this does nothing but piss me off more!

Another Phony Attempt at "Back Door Registration". Plain and simple, first mandate a record of ALL transactions, then access said record, and mine the info. Want to guess what comes after that?

CONFISCATION (or a sorry attempt at it, since it will start a 2nd Revolution, or more likely Civil War #2)

They CAN'T get it passed in Washington, so, they're doing EXACTLY as I predicted long ago. They're going to State Level to get it done. I think this will only enrage folks from certain states (Like Maine, NH and VT). Remember, in some states, even the Liberals believe in Gun Rights.
