U.S Army Corps of Engineers recommends replacing the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges

oh. all i ever saw was a few pleasure boats going up and down.
nevermind

i sincerely hope they DESIGN these bridges to use the latest materials, like Coreten steel, and the newly discovered concrete that has crystaline additives in it (like old roman concrete did) to stop crack propagation. MA could not maintain its way out of a paper bag.
I hope they use Chinese steel and concrete and Chinese thread locker for the bolts.

That would expedite the Cape becoming an island again.

Don't forget all the people who have built there homes down there and are now having them taken by Eminent Domain for this bridge project. I would go out in a skirt of brass if that was me.
F*ck that.
F*ck the cape and their traffic.

This new bridge won't solve sh*t, it will be a huge nightmare commuting down because the highway on the other side is tiny. It will be a matter of months before we are seeing the same stupid traffic.

I hope these people fight and delay it by years.

if it has to be open to boat traffic, why not a tunnel?

what makes the bridge so expensive is it having to be high enougbh to clear the conning towers of military ships

I always wondered if it is used as frequently as it used to be. In the 70's and early 80's my family regularly camped at the campground underneath the Bourne Bridge. My grandparents kept their camper there all summer if they were not traveling. I used to watch all manner of big ships going through the canal. I still spend a little time in Bourne these days but I've never seen anything big go through the canal as an adult.
It has been a good 15 years since I fished the canal, but when I did each day I saw a barge, a freighter or a cruise ship use the canal.

Because tunnels are 10x more expensive than bridges.

We aren't paying enough taxes even with the Big Dig bonds hanging over us. Are we still paying off the Mass Pike bonds from 1956?
No. When the bonds were about the paid off, the MA PikeAutority issued new bonds to assure it could not be phased out of existence as originally planned.

The authority was also signing binding contracts for EzPass while the "Free the pike" referendum was pending, to provide another obligation that would necessitate the perpetuation of tolls.

Fast Forward 5 years, now they're expecting completion in 2034 at a cost of only $4.5b.
No friggin' way that's happening, we'll be lucky if we get just one of the two bridges completed for that.
Remember the Big Dig ? They projected that to cost a measly $2.9b, but it ballooned to well over $25b by the time it opened.

I saw that yesterday. My biggest concern - and there isn't a great graphic about it - is the cape side of the Bourne Bridge. Now it's a disaster. They need 3 lanes off the bridge. One to flyover to 28, one to loop over everthing and drop you on 6A to get to the Saggy Moore Bridge and one minor one to drop you onto the local traffic. Eliminate the rotatory. Sad for the Trump supporters with their signs, but he'll be 100 by the time it's complete anyhow. LOL

I hear they aren't going to have to be painted blue b/c they are using Reardon Metal for the structure.

It is going ot INCREASE traffic and move the traffic jams more on-Cape. Meh. I don't go anymore, so have at it. LOL

But not feeling like it's Thunderdome going over the bridge will be nice on the rare occasion I'll have to go. And eliminating the Bourne Rotary as an immediate impediment to traffic will be an added bonus. Zip over like they do on the Sagamore.

Bridge clearance on all 3 bridges is 135 ft at mean low water. According to the U S Army Corps of Engineers.
Not sure what it is planned in the current design phase.

I said the exact same thing over Rt 3 to NH.
It still has no place to go.

Already happening. The homeowners have banded together and hired representation. The suits are inevitable and I’d be surprised if it’s resolved within a decade. I’ve said it earlier in the thread, but I highly doubt the first bridge will be done before I die.

Mmmmm. Maybe. They are starting the Sagamore first and IIRC no Emmit da Main on that project. I don't think the Bourne bridge even begins construction for another 8 years or so. Plenty of time to unsuccessfully fight the ID in court.

They're gonna lose. This isn't taking property to build a mall. They are moving a highway and fixing the disaster that is that whole area. Something they SHOULD HAVE DONE 35 years ago when they built Rt 25.

Whaaaaat? Mass highway f***ing up for 40 years? Noooooooo

They've been screwing up since turnpikes used actual pikes. ;)

I think mASSdot's goal is to do a project twice. I think they learned it from RI.

RI's state saint is Our Lady of Perpetual Road Construction.

But you see mASSdot do a project. Then 10 years later, they are re-doing it. Out my orafice window, I can see 2. Braga Bridge and Rt 79/Davol St.

I love it when they do those big traffic studies before installing lights at an intersection that should have had lights in the 1970's. They do this big study and then create a traffic pattern that is actually WORSE than no lights at all. Then after massive complaints, fix it.

Why not do it right the frist time.

Best was Rt 140 on the ass-end of the industrial park. They repaved 140 at the fairly-new lights. And mASSdot decided to ABSOLUTELY F UP the lanes. They TOOK LANES AWAY. No one watching. No one saying, "wait, is this how we found this?" Nope. 4-5 months of chaos. And the city can't fix it b/c it's a state road.

Hell, the lights there are STILL screwed up. Someone related to someone at mASSdot takes lefts from 140 into the industrial park too often. B/c that is the most common green. A LEFT F'ING TURN IS THE MOST COMMON GREEN LIGHT! GAH!

Sorry. No love for mASSdot.

I'm driving through the 495/90 roadworks to get to work. Guarantee they'll f*** that up.

Not true. You're making it sound like they actually stopped sometime over the past 10 years.

I'm still trying to figure out who thought getting rid of 79 was a good idea. Nobody is going to be walking down to the waterfront who wouldn't have used 1 of the underpasses. Now the people trying to just get through Fall River are going to get screwed. This is going to be like the south end of Eastern Ave.

Do not get me started on mASSdot and Rt 140. They really f'd up the Winchendon-Gardner end when they redid it some years ago by reducing the length of some of the passing lanes, eliminating all but 1 dotted line passing section that's too short to really use, and putting in nearly 8 miles of centerline plastic batons to keep people from crossing over. Half the batons got plowed off the first winter and half the remaining ones were gone by the end of the 2nd winter. I think the state came back once, after the 2nd or 3rd winter, and replaced all the missing ones but have not been back since. The question was asked when they went in about who would be responsible for replacing them and as I recall either mASSdot said they would do it, or they promised the towns would receive state funds to do it. Now there are at most a dozen left.

I remember when they did the Rt 146/Mass Pike work. A girl I was going to school with at the time was having her parents house taken to build the off-ramp. They tried to fight it but lost pretty quick. The State wanted to move fast and as such they took a whole neighborhood to build that area. They weren’t happy with the compensation either, but who would if you were forcibly removed from your property.

Reads article... Wait, they moved in 3 months ago when this was proposed five years ago and they're bitching about it??

Is this like moving next to an airport and complaining about the noise?

Also: there's a dumpster that I pick up right behind their house at 2:30a.m. every other Thursday

I drive on the sagamore daily. Traffic is already starting.

I still can’t wrap my head around it costing almost 8X the price of the golden gate when adjusted for inflation. Incomprehensible to me.
