TX - Police Seize "Cache Of Assault Weapons Presumed To Be Headed For Mexico"

Federal prosecutors released the names of Damaso Alberto Rueda Cabrera and Arnulfo de la Cruz Sanchez on Thursday along with the unusual announcement that the men made their initial appearances in federal court, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to terms of 10 days and 45 days, respectively, all on Tuesday.

Huh? Where's the justice in this? That'll stop Mexicans from trying this again. [rolleyes]

all of the articles have the same basic information. 147 AK-47s, 263 "banana style" magainzes, 53 Beyonets, 10,000 rounds of ammunition, authorities are trying to trace the source of the firearms.

I'm sure that ATF has completed the traces by now and won't release anything to the public because "It could compromise an ongoing investigation". Which basically means never. If the trace results can make us gunnies look bad, it will play out that way. If not, we will never know anything. Jack.

The ATF can't release the trace information to anyone other than a law enforcement officer involved in an active investigation per federal law. The only way the information will be released is if they arrest someone in connection with the sales AND the police tell the media that it is in connection to this arrest.

I was able to find an article (have to look for it again) that claims US purchased semi-automatic AR-15s and AK-47s are being modified (article didn't say in the US or Mexico) for fully-automatic operation after purchase, so it is possible these weapons were purchased / stolen as civilian semi-automatic AK-47s and illegally modified for fully automatic fire.

While the media and several political groups will try to use this incident to push for further legal restrictions, there have been so many laws violated in this instance, that what really needs to happen is current law needs to be enforced.

I also agree, I'd like to see a lot more focus on the fact that theys were in the country illegally and it is already a federal crime for anyone (individual or business) to sell these guys a firearm, even at a "Gun Show"

Illegals doing something illegal in the US to make lawfull citizens look bad?
Color me shocked!

I love how they make a point of the rifles being "boxed". It reminds me of scenes in the movies with G-men prying the lids off wooden crates. In this case, it was probably flimsy cardboard.

Are you suggesting that these characters will be back in the criminal milieu in 11 and 46 days, respectively?

Cynic!

It was really probably a load of Glocks they were going to take down to the wall and blow a hole in it.

Here's a news report that includes video of the siezed firearms - http://www.pro8news.com/news/local/95666429.html

Various models of AK-47s, all sitting on top of their cardboard shipping boxes. Looks like there are also some canvas carry bags as well.

So far, the only thing the two men have been charged with is entering the country illegally.

http://www.pro8news.com/news/local/95382304.html - At least according to this report from earlier this week, all of the firearms were fully-automatic AK-47s.

Correct other than information could be made public during discovery motions.

Is there some chance that these illegals did buy from dealers and (at least) one of them notified the ATF because they were suspicious?

This would not play to the media/federal/Calderone narrative.

Amazing that no reporters are asking the question, "Where did the guns come from?"

I dont consider anyone individual that LEGALLY owns firearms to have a " cache" or " stockpile" or any other term the media uses to make them sound like some sort of nut. If this guy was a car collector and was arrested for oui would they be talking about his "cache " of cars in his garage , does Leno have a "cahe" of cars.

Uh, guys, this actually looks like a very good story for US gun owners.

What I'm seeing is that criminals are smuggling illegal firearms into the US, into states with "far too lax gun laws", something the Brady Bunch claims never happens, when in fact LE routinely recover guns like this.

Calderon said that 75,000 guns had been seized in Mexico in three years and 80 percent of those that could be traced came from the U.S.
So, now he has made up his own number...

Hey Phill, we already went through that BS stat only hillary and crew claimed it was 90% and it turned out to be complete BS...

Try again... No wait, don't bother, just shut up and go back to deal with your own corrupt socialist, racist government before you dare come try to tell us how to run our country.

The title of the Fox News article doesn't at all match what the story actually says...

The title is "Feds Sentence Two Illegal Immigrants for Carrying Nearly 150 Assault Rifles Into U.S." but the text of the story says that while the two plead guilty to entering the U.S. illegally at different times it "appeared clear the guns were destined for Mexico."

Gotta love the MSM.....

No, that percentage is correct, however, I can understand the confusion over it. "80 percent of those that could be traced" is a truthful statement, not 80% of all guns confiscated.

The President included a crucial qualifier in his statement: he was referring only to the guns that Mexico has (with U.S. assistance) been able to trace. And in that context, the President’s claim is correct: he was referring to a U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report concluding that, of the guns seized in Mexico and given to the ATF for tracing from 2004 through 2008, approximately 87 percent originated in the U.S.

But this number says nothing about the percentage of guns seized in Mexico that originated in the U.S., because the U.S. does not trace the majority of guns seized in Mexico. Figures like “87 percent” sound impressive, but actual numbers are more illustrative. According to the GAO, the number of guns seized in Mexico that have been traced back to the U.S. has ranged from 5,260 in 2005 to 1,950 in 2006 to 3,060 in 2007 to 6,700 in 2008.

Thus, if the “last three years” the President mentioned are 2007, 2008, and 2009, only 9,760 of the guns seized in those years – the total of 2007 and 2008 – definitely came from the U.S. The U.S. share for 2009 has not yet been reported, but even if it doubled the total of 2008, the U.S. share for all three years would be less than a third of the 75,000 seizures in Mexico. A more realistic U.S. share is between 20 and 25 percent.
