Two new antique acquisitions - 336 and a 1903

A friend of the family is slimming down. He offered me his 1942 Remington 1903 which has been "sporterized" with a Lyman peep and cut down handguard, and a 1964 Marlin 336 in .35 remington.
The lever gun was his "bear gun" for years in Pa. The 1903 was his fathers deer gun. I'm a sucker for the old marlin levers and have wanted a 1903 for a long time. Range day tomorrow to verify my purchases. These guns have some serious miles and history

I have respect for the 30 30. It's quite adequate for deer. However I know bullet diameter is a major factor. "A 30 30 may expand but a .35 won't shrink"

The old wood is hard to beat. I have an old Mossberg44 that was passed to me a few years back. The wood grain is is nice and tight. Looks similar to what you have.

No prob ringing the gong at 100 yds. I found I was better with the 1903 outfitted with a Lyman sight than I was with the 336 and a fixed 4x

I have an older 336 in .35,, i never hunted deer but when used on coyotes they go down like they were hit by a city bus.

I had to give my dad's 1967 .35 Rem 336 away to my nephew at request of my father......I miss it.....but glad its still in the family.

I will replace it with a Ruger/Marlin if they make them ever, or old Marlin if I see one worth buying.

First gun I ever hunted with was my uncles Marlin 336 in 35 rem. In VT as a kid. 35 years later we are still hunting.

A newer 336 (1968) in .35 Remington was my first lever gun purchase (within the last year or so). It's been such a hoot, I picked up a 1948 336 RC in .30-30 even more recently. Both guns are a blast. I don't hunt, but I have a milk crate or more of .30-30 that I'd loaded up over the years, so why not.

Very nice! I know that it borders on heresy, but I really like the look of old milsurps sporterized. They just look so much more useful than in their original configuration.

I appreciate it's "minor" sportorization compared to some. And I really like the period correct Lyman sights. I have the small tin with 10 or so different interchangable front sight pictures. And the originals. It will go back to stock form if I find a piece of wood but I kind of like it as is
