Okay...who's going for turkey in April? Ed's decided to get in to hunting and he wants to tag a turkey. He likes challenges. [smile] I have a queation on the hen call - can anyone suggest a good video to get that will show him how the call is supposed to go? He's been practing with the one he bought, but I think he could use some helpful advice. I think the name of the one he got was a wing caller...or sumpthin like that.

Some of the Primos vids are pretty good. You should buy him a couple of other calls in addition to the one/ones he has. For the most part turkey calls are cheap. One other bit of advice, learn to use a diaphragm call. They can be a little tricky to pick up but it will leave your hands free to set up your gun or bow. Hope that helps.

Dumb question...is that one you buy, or do you use your own body to do it?

Lynne,

Just ask your doc for a Rx and bring it to your pharmacy! [laugh2] [devil] [rofl2]

Lynne, You buy a diaphragm call, and not at the pharmacy, They are cheap and vary in design enough to change pitch and tone so buy 3 or so. Last time I bought some I think they were around 12 bucks for a 3 pack. What I like about them is your hands are free, movement is at a minimum when the birds are close, and maybe the most important is unlike a box or slate call they still work in the rain. One quick word of advice on Turkey hunting, try to find a flock of birds close to the opening of the season and then make sure everyone else hasn't found the same flock. Here in Marshfield you could make money in some parts of the woods selling coffee and doughnuts there are so many guys out.

Thanks js - I think I remember seeing them at Kittery last weekend. I'll let Ed know. He was planning on going out the day before with his owl call to see where they're roosting. I'll tell him to scout around a few days before the season opens. We're in section 10 on the map, so he's been looking at what's available for sites to go to. There's a few. He needs to talk to a few of the guys at the club who turkey hunt to find out if there's any places that are sparse so he can avoid them. He's not exactly the Prince of Patience [laugh], and if he goes somewhere where there isn't any birds, I can see him lasting a REAL long time. [wink]

Lynne, The patience thing is probably a good thing for your husband. I have found that if you have the woods you will be calling and moving quite a bit to find the birds and get set up. Then when you do set up you know there are birds around so you will have the drive to wait it out. Turkey hunting is a lot of fun, hunting in the spring how cool is that? It is surely addictive and can get a little gear intensive but the cost is fairly low compared to othe types of bird hunting. After the calls are squared away I would reccomend good camo, a padded seat, and pattern your shotgun! A buddy of mine hunts with a lot of folks in Maryland and can't believe how bad some guys are with their guns.

I have the feeling that he'll be more patient waiting for "dinner" than he would be at waiting for other things. [laugh] He's picked up some camo (including hood to hide his face), and a sock to put over the shotgun. We went to Kittery last weekend and he lucked out on some sale items. How good is that?? [wink] He likes a challenge, so this should be right up his alley (as far as hunting goes). We never thought about a pad...good idea. Thanks hun.

If I am not mistaken You actally put it in your mouth. it sits in the roof of the mouth and you use it by a combination of tounge and air pressure.
(keep your minds out of the gutters... )

Just don't shoot that Turkey Weer'd, that's alcohol abuse!

Hells no!! I haven't shot any booze since I was in college! Shot glasses are for fools who buy crap and don't want to taste it!

Nope I have a wide selection of Rocks Glasses that I drink my turkey out of. And I take my Whiskeys neat! Ice just spoils it IMHO.

Back on track...

Just confirmed that after my rifle match on 1 April, a buddy of mine and I are headed up to Tenn for the opening of turkey season. Same cabin / property where we got our deer last fall. Time to break out my Ghuillie!
