The Democrats in the Senate are attempting a sneak attack. They have set the hearing on the gun confiscation bill for Tuesday 5/7 hoping that you will be exhausted from defending against their prior assault on your right to keep and bear arms only last week. They could have scheduled all of these bills for one day, but they didn’t.

They hoping that you wouldn’t be willing or able to come to Concord again to defend your rights against this fourth bill, the most dangerous one of all.

Just remember, while the hardworking citizens are at work, those in Concord are intent on stripping us of our rights, and they are making it harder for citizens to share their opinions.

The public hearing for HB696 will be at 9:45AM on Tuesday, May 7 before the Senate Judiciary Committee, State House Room 100.

Please plan to attend and voice your opposition to these blatant attacks on your civil right to be armed. We must work together to make our voices heard. Even if you plan to attend Tuesday’s public hearing, it is important to write to all members of the Judiciary Committee to let them know that you are opposed to all of these bills.

Senator Shannon Chandley, Vice Chairman, [email protected];
Senator Melanie Levesque, [email protected];
Senator Sharon Carson, [email protected];
Senator Harold French, [email protected]

PRE-WRITTEN MESSAGE TO THE SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE:
Dear Committee Members,

HB 696 is a long complex bill, that is attempting to create a new standard in New Hampshire allowing third parties to petition the courts in ex-parte hearings to take away a person’s Second (New Hampshire Article 2 and 2-a), Fourth (New Hampshire Article 19), Fifth (New Hampshire Article 19), and Fourteenth Amendment rights without due process. Sure, the “respondent” can request a hearing — after the fact and spend thousands of dollars on attorneys and experts and only if the order is written. But that is after property has been confiscated and rights have been violated. Ex-parte hearings should never be allowed. The accused should always be part of any hearing conducted. Please vote HB 696 “inexpedient to legislate”. Thank you.

After you have contacted the Judiciary Committee, please click here to find out how to contact your own Senator and then let them know you are opposed to all of these anti-gun bills.

And last, but not least, Email Governor Sununu, [email protected], (or call him at (603) 271-2121) and urge him to veto HB 696 if it reaches his desk. Please remember to be polite but firm and request that the Governor respond to your message. Now would be an appropriate time to remind Governor Sununu, that no gun control bills were enacted into law during the fourteen years that the Governor’s Office was occupied by Governors Benson, Lynch, and Hassan.

Lastly, it is now time to contact the Governor:
Please politely and firmly tell Governor Sununu that these four bills, HB109, HB514, HB564, and HB696 do not contain anything worthwhile and should promptly be vetoed; anything less can and should be viewed as a sell out of his core constituency.

Governor Sununu has publicly threatened to veto other bills. Gun owners need and deserve to know when he will publicly announce his opposition to HB 696 and all of the other radical proposals that we have been telling you about.

Thanks for your continued support.

In liberty,

JR Hoell
Corporate Secretary – NHFC, Inc.P.S.: Have you signed our petition opposing all anti-gun bills? If not, please click here to sign. We have already printed and delivered almost 1,300 of your petitions to Speaker of the House and another box of 2,200 to the Senate Judiciary but we need even more signed petitions before we deliver these to the Governor and Senate President.

PS. One of the republicans on the committee is sponsoring one of these gun control bills.

NHFC is working on another alert. We found a really good way to explain how this 'elder care' bill would strip you of your rights.

If anyone's testifying, I hope you mention this....

So the ERPO bills take peoples' guns because "The person might be a threat to themselves or others."

Do they also take the person's cars, ropes, knives, baseball bats, or golf clubs? Do they take away the person's access to high places, or eliminate gravity? Do they take away the person's prescription drugs? Because there are many ways for people to hurt themselves or others beyond just guns.

Do they provide ANY counseling or other services to these ostensibly despondent people? Or just take away their guns, thereby PROVING that "they really are out to get them"?

Answer the questions honestly and it becomes evident pretty quick that these bills have nothing whatsoever to do with anyone's safety, and everything to do with just taking guns for the sake of taking guns.

These bills are about control, not safety.

...and as the case of the uncle in Vermont demonstrates, they WILL be misused to disarm people who aren't a danger to anyone at all.

Hearing started at 1126. It was late because the hearing on HB481, Legalization of Cannabis, started at 0900 and ran long. Might have been a tactic, to make pro-2A witnesses get frustrated and leave before it started.

AARP and Alzheimer's Association testified in favor of bill. All others were against. Most were impressively concise and on-point. The general thrust was that while the intention to protect elderly vulnerable people from abusive caretakers is noble, the drafting of this bill is so bad that it should be rewritten. Some of the protections actually do make sense, but the firearms confiscation is gratuitous and irrelevant. The bill was based on the domestic violence law which has been upheld, but the circumstances which could cause a petition for protective orders are not directly comparable to domestic violence, so that model is not a good fit. I didn't hear every witness as I had to leave at 12:30. Two committee members are co-sponsors of the bill, so expect it to be recommended to the floor, where it will pass on a party-line vote.

It might be hard for the Governor to veto this one as it isn't 100% bad and the basic intent is sympathetic.

The above is a good summary. I was there as well.
FWIW, 3 of the committee members, Sen. Chandley (D), Dist 11; Sen. Carson (R), Dist 14; Sen. Hennessey (D), Dist 5 are all co-sponsors. Keep the pressure on the cmte members.

We know that this bill could have been heard along with the other anti-gun bills last week, so there is some credibility to the theory that the Senate Judiciary members are working against the wishes of the gun owners. Holding the hearing after the MJ bill was more than a coincidence. Two quotes come to mind regarding the hearings being scheduled with only 45 minutes for the HB481 bill when the prior hearing took all day...
Never ascribe to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by incompetence.
Whether this was incompetence, stupidity or malice, it does not matter. Either way, a greater effort to schedule the hearings so that they would start on time. A 945am hearing starting at 1126 was wrong.

Lastly, if you did not see this, the NHGOP issued this press release yesterday: It is good to know that under the new chairman, the party is working to follow the platform.

Concord, NH - NHGOP Chairman Stephen Stepanek released the following statement as the New Hampshire Senate considers House Bill 696-FN:

"As the State Senate hears House Bill 696, they need to be informed that it contains numerous assaults on our Constitutional rights. As written, HB 696 creates a new standard in New Hampshire that will allow third parties to petition the courts to take away a person's Second, Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment rights without due process. An attack on one person's due process under the law is an attack on all. This "red flag" legislation does not reduce gun violence and will only lead to the deterioration of further rights enshrined in the United States and New Hampshire constitutions. We must stand firm for our second amendment and article 2A rights, and we cannot allow the government to encroach upon our right to self-defense. HB 696 is a lawyer's dream as it will create far more time in courts for Granite Staters simply seeking to exercise their rights. It should be soundly rejected, and all legislators should oppose this anti-Second Amendment legislation."

Can't believe you people worry about what you post in here. So long as you aren't threatening anyone or being indecent, you have every right to post what you feel. If you're that scared just putting words down, what are you actually gonna do if they come knocking to take your guns just because they want to? And when they bill you COD for their confiscation services? No payment? Tell the judge why, hands behind your back, bend over and grab your ankles.

There has not been a vote. The next committee hearings are tomorrow and 5/14. Bills that have a financial impact are do out by 5/16
