Port Authority Police were alerted and arrested two travelers
A woman was stopped at Newark Liberty International Airport for bringing a loaded assault rifle and ammunition in a checked bag on Monday.

The traveler from East Orange, N.J., was traveling through the airport when TSAdiscovered the rifle, which had “a high-powered magazine and an arsenal of ammunition.” The weapon had been “artfully concealed” behind the lining of the suitcase, the TSA said in a media release shared with Fox News. It was found during a screening check.

High-capacity magazines and assault rifles are both illegal in New Jersey, where Newark airport is located.

Though guns are allowed to be packed in checked bags, they must be placed in a hard-sided container, unloaded, and disclosed to the airline when checking the bag at the ticket counter, per TSA guidelines. However, the laws for possessing certain firearms vary between states, and travelers must comply with state regulations. High-capacity magazines and assault rifles are both illegal in New Jersey, where Newark airport is located.

“Our TSA officers are very skilled at detecting firearms and other prohibited items,” said Tom Carter, TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey.

“In this case, they detected an assault rifle, which is illegal in New Jersey; a high-capacity magazine, which is also illegal in New Jersey; four boxes of hollow-point bullets, again, illegal in New Jersey; three magazines, one of which was fully loaded; and two additional boxes of rifle ammunition. This was an incredibly good catch on the part of our officers because the traveler attempted to evade detection by concealing the items beneath the lining of his suitcase.”

Port Authority Police were alerted to the scene and arrested the woman and the man she was traveling with. The weapons and bullets were confiscated by authorities.

I summarized the article.

“In this case, they detected an assault rifle, which is illegal in New Jersey; a high-capacity magazine, which is also illegal in New Jersey; four boxes of hollow-point bullets, again, illegal in New Jersey; three magazines, one of which was fully loaded; illegal in New Jersey; and two additional boxes of rifle ammunition. In an unlocked case; illegal in New Jersey. The rifle appears to have a short barrel; Illegal in New Jersey. It appears the couple were chewing gum with their mouths open, again, Illegal in New Jersey.

And the magazine was "loaded" but the AR pistol was not. I wonder what the real story is here. Did they forget that was the bag with the AR Pistol in it? Every bag gets scanned, nobody in their right mind would intentionally bring this through an airport.

I also want to know where we can get "high-powered" magazines?

That, versus a "low-powered" one? Looks like everything even remotely firearm-related is illegal in that socialist state!

since when is four boxes of ammo and a loaded magazine and "arsenal" of ammunition.

If I have less than 100 round, not that I would, but if I did I wouldn't even waste my time going to the range.

Right, that's why you fail every test when agents easily sneak bombs thru. cuz so much skillz.

I wish that in my job a success rate of 20-30% would result in my boss praising my skills.

The news of the failure comes two years after ABC News reported that secret teams from the DHS found that the TSA failed 95 percent of the time to stop inspectors from smuggling weapons or explosive materials through screening. .

Excellent fact checking and writing skills, strike again![rofl2]

No. No they aren't.

But they are really good at seeing amazingly detailed AR-shaped objects inside of suitcases. Like, HOW HARD WAS THAT??? Might as well put a file in a cake at that point.
Was literally going to post the same exact thing.

Honestly sounds very suspicious. Someone put a AR pistol, loaded mags, and boxes of hollow points from a different caliber than the pistol inside the lining of a suitcase they knew was going through an Xray machine? Yeah, right. What was the term from Minority Report? "Orgy of evidence"? That's what this sounds like to me.

Those would be the ones with the wicked strong springs in em. You gotta make those yourself.
I can't even imagine the raw power when you combine the High-Power Magazine with a Shoulder Thing that Goes Up. Biblical.

There was a case a few years ago when someone wife's planted gun parts in his luggage to get the upper hand in a custody dispute:

Fortunately, there were good cops involved who worked to get the truth rather than just a conviction.

Very strange indeed. Maybe total cluelessness on traveling with firearms. I wonder if they had just properly declared if they would have just been told it was all stored wrong and would have been refused acceptance or if TSA would have still gone and investigated whether it was legal in NJ.

In some sense airports should be an island where state laws are not pertinent, ie if TSA is federal they shouldn't care about breaking state laws, particularly if its legal where the couple was headed, not to mention for all TSA knows the travellers are allowed to own such guns in NJ (laws do not apply to LE for instance I am sure). Or for instance people get re-routed when flying, sometimes you may need to leave security to pickup and re check a bag, state laws shouldn't apply.

Have you considered becoming a Designated Hitter. Looks like pitchers hitting will go the way of the dodo bird in the NL. Some good job openings out there. 30% would make you a hero.

In some airports the process of checking a gun (it must be declared to the airline) results in a call to non-federal police for a legality check. This the case in many or perhaps all NY airports (not just the ones in NYC) and NJ.

Or if hitting isn't working out, go the Don Baylor route and just lean into pitches to get on base. .342 lifetime OBP on a .260 batting average (ie: he got hit a lot).
