I saw tritium iron sights for the AR15 rifle. I was wondering under what conditions would they be useful?

It seems like if it is dark enough to see them glowing, then it might be too dark to see the target.
On the other hand, I suppose if you are in a dark place, looking out at a target which is illuminated from elsewhere, it would be helpful. It seems like it had to be pretty dark to see them glowing though, they give off a very low amount of light.

They work fairly well, I'm told. I have Night Sights on my G19, and that helps your sight alignment in the dark. Usually you can nake out a target, but the sights can be hard to see.

I do wish I had Tritium sights on the M16A1 I used in Boot Camp.

quick question about night sights from a newbie with guns.when it comes to night sights,do they just glow in the dark or what?

reason i ask is last night as i was trying to fall asleep,i happen to open my eyes and i notice these two green glowing dots coming from my gun that was on my makeshift night stand(wooden ammo box)

when i got the gun it was used so i have no idea what on it is stock and what on it has been upgraded.wasn't sure if night sights came on the beretta 92s out of the box or not.

btw-i didn't deal with prev owner so i couldn't of asked him/her what was done to it.(it's looking pretty stock on the outside)

Yep, they just glow: no need to "charge" them like glow in the dark paint. There's a little vial of tritium in the sight. As it decays, it throws off electrons that hit a phosphor coating (just like in a TV or monitor) and the phosphor glows. They'll slowly get dimmer. After 12 years they'll be about half as bright.
