So its been a bit since my first gun purchase and i've bounced ideas for my second firearm off people, though about a ton of different ideas , from another glock, 17 or 19, a tiny cute NAA black widow to a gsg ,

I was able to hold a new glock 19 in my hand with no backstrap and still, that lower bump out on the back of the grip was annoying me , i still need to see if its the same with the 17 or if its a tad lower to miss my hand, but then i was searching online and found a used GSG 5pk, the pistol version for 465. Which isnt bad. Only problem is , if i got it , i would want to AOW vertical forgrip on it. But that could wait. Until ive got more money.

So my choices are a glock 17 depending on how much that 2mm reduction does once i can feel one, or a pistol variant of the Gsg, which could be fun, or it could be a legal hassle with the AOW stuff, im not really looking to put a stock on it, as i tried a gsg fullsize and my shoulder came back with red marks as if it was beaten up, yes i know , a .22 kicked the crap out of my shoulder ... Sounds impossible but it did . And dont feel like sucking it up lol. What do you think would be fun to have as my next purchase? as my glock 26 is my ccw and defense gun.

What do you guys think?

+1 on the 10/22. Many, Many reasons to take this advice! extremely versatile, customizable and great way to practice marksmanship. Look into Appleseed!

+2 on 10/22, lots of fun and opportunities to shoot it. Grab a Mosin, for $100, you'd appreciate 10/22 recoil. Don't sweat the choice, it's not your last gun, after you got half a dozen, adding a new toy to your safe is easy.

Do you have any plans for a certain firearm "in the future?" If you're contemplating one day buying an AR or a mil-surp rifle, a .22 caliber AR (such as the M$P 15-22) or a Ruger 10/22 would be a wise investment. Especially since the cost is far from prohibitive.

oh no! now i am going to have to buy a 10/22, hopefully ill use some self control and wait till i have more money to spend on toys. But for 150 bucks i might have to let loose haha.

I got my 10/22 at a gun show for 120, in almost new condition and it included a scope (pretty crappy, probably $20 new) I figure that's a couple of tanks of gas or a trip to the grocery store.

There are lots of nice .22's.

The Remington 597 is real nice. So are the Savages. I never cared much for Marlins, but those are also pretty popular. Have you considered a Henry Golden Boy? If you haven't tried one, please do before you buy ANYTHING. Also, the Thompson Center Classic was real nice with good clean, classic lines. CZ also makes a real nice gun.

Check out the .22's here: http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/rifles.htm

So many options.

well i did like the gsg carbine model i used, but when i got home and took a shower , i had little red almost scratch marks from the stock where it was touching my shoulder, which kinda made me wonder if my shoulder doesn't like stocks. which put me more of the idea in the PK variant of the gsg. i was holding it in my hand , its really nice, but is it worth it , i don't know yet. my first priority this weekend is to hold in my hand the 17, 19 gen 4's and see it fits. if it does , great , onto another handgun for now. but if not, then i don't see why i shouldn't get the gsg 5pk. its 465 , really hard to find in massachusetts, and it will be easier to SBR than the carbine model which requires cutting the barrel and some other things. im not huge into wanting a rifle at this point, until maybe i move from where i am now, to a larger place , and have some place to put a rifle cabinet... which doesn't suit me at this moment, but a pistol variant of a rifle i can take care of. i looked at the 10/22 , its nice but , i looked at a Remington 770 compact rifle , which is really nice. but then again , im not going to be buying rifles until i get a gun safe, or the like, not that i don't feel comfortable with a gun case or something, i just don't have the space , especially when i want to move into the city soon, and the apartment is probably going to be super small.. so either something like a GSG PK , i can buy now.

Coyote:
Yes im going to definitly try anything before i buy it , minus the glock 17/19 cause i own a 26 and ive shot the gsg carbine, which was really fun, but its still pretty heavy ,

* found out the remington cartridge size .243.. way too much to be plinking around with , especially with my easybruise shoulders lol..

The Remington 597 sucks - NOT reliable. I've seen several of them barf their extractors. Even the gun stores don't like to carry them.

This is the polar opposite of what I've heard. Again, if it were me, I'd go with the TC, the CZ, the Savage, or the Henry.

I've seen it happen myself, not once but three times now. Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is [strike]enemy action[/strike] a shitty design. I wouldn't have one if you gave it to me.

As for the gun dealers... most of the sales reps at Lew Hortons would groan when they got a shipment of them in, 'cause they knew that they were required to sell a certain amount or lose their allocations of the "good" guns. I had one dealer in NY tell me flat out he won't carry them. "They suck" - his exact words. I wasn't a very good salesman (which is why I'm back in telecom) but even the good reps hated trying to unload those turkeys.

There are far better .22s on the market - the Savage, the Henry, the Marlins (I like my Papoose!), the Ruger and the S&W 15-22. I'd get any of them before I'd get a 597.

The best thing about a Ruger 10/22 is that you can constantly change it around to fit your needs and wants.

All of these rifles in this guy's pic are Ruger 10/22s with different hardware sold all over the net.

Coyote... you MUST be mistaking the Remington 597 with the Marlin 795. The Remington 597 is notoriously shitty. My brother bought one years ago against my advice... and he couldn't throw it away fast enough. Duck taping 2 straws to the barrel would have worked better than the "bipod" it came with. And even on a bench rest the rifle never shot less than an 8" group at 75 feet with multiple brands of ammo. The factory magazines would jam and/or drop out of the gun at random. Absolutely the worst rifle I've ever had the joy of shooting.

The Marlin 795, on the other hand, is awesome... has great reviews... and is basically one of the best values out there... very accurate, very reliable... for ~$100 from Dicks. I have a 10/22T and a 795. Both are awesome.

If someone gave me a 597 for free... I'd happily accept it... and then proceed to set it down on the berm and use it for target practice [grin]

Maddie, I'll bring my Ruger 10/22T and Marlin 795 on Sunday so you can take a look at them too if you'd like... [grin] I really really doubt you'll have any bruises from them... my 10/22T is pretty heavy as .22 rifles go... so there really is no recoil at all... just an audible "pop"... [wink]

[laugh2] I feed mine a steady diet of the Federal 550 bulk packs, only had 2 or 3 ammo related issues in over 3000+ rounds, (they were "failure to fire"s), no other problems to speak of.

The only downside for the M&P 15-22 in this state is the 10 round magazine limit. I would love to get some 25 rounders, but it's still a great little gun, pretty accurate and lots of fun.

Wow. I guess Remington isn't what they used to be, or at least according to two people on NES. I'm a little surprised.
