I was told recently that building one is a great way to go. The idea sounds very appealing for many reasons. I have a couple of questions for anyone out there.

Can I build something better than what I would pay for a WSAR?
Are there any drawbacks to doing a build?
Any other information about the subject is also welcome.

It depends on if you know people with tools or not.

Yes you'll build some thing better then a wsar. But if your buying tools your looking at spending more.

If you plan to build a few the cost of tolls will pay for it with what you save.

If I hunt for a barrel I can build one for under 400$ .

My 45acp built on a underfolder kit costing my 360$ that's Including a mac10 mag well and turning my barrel from a blank .

If you just want a basic akm or ak74 . Buy some thing premade.
If you got some hand tools already and a drill press and plan to build a bunch and try different cals . Build .

do it.

the bare minimum is an arbor press, a chunk of brass, and the harbor freight bolt cutters with the rivet jaws on them. also some cheap ass nasty beer.

do it.
