Pure and simple, with few exceptions, dump the prison system. Here are a few alternatives I suggest:

1.) If you commit a non-violent crime, such as burglary, you'll work it off to repay the victim

2.) Non-violent offenders must also do community service to repay society

3.) "Minor" violent crimes, such as brawling, etc will be treated in a similar fashion-community service/restitution

4.) Recidivists for non-violent offenses and drug dealers will be shackled at a yet to be determined location, possibly a remote island, along with ne'er-do-wells who don't follow #1-3

5.) Corrupt politicians will be tarred and feathered

6.) Serious violent offenders, drug lords, and white collar criminals whose actions/greed result in death will be executed

There you have it-our new, simplified, and improved criminal justice system. You're welcome!

It will never fly. There's too much money to be made in the "so-called" criminal justice system (Police, Lawyers, Judges, treatment programs, Psychiatrists/Psychologists, Bail Bondsmen, Probation/Parole officers, Trial Court Personnel, and the Prison system itself).

If drugs were legal, drug dealers would cease to exist.

If we really had a Second Amendment all gun charges would go away.

I like some of your ideas, but the powers that be want people who make mistakes on Uncle Sam's / The State's plantation. The "system" wants you to fail despite a mission statement to the contrary.

Heinous crimes should result in lifetime incarceration or capital punishment (Public hangings would be a great deterrent).

Wrong, some people, like me, think true violent predators need to be six feet under and not relaxing with friends and family in prison.
People like you dont seem to understand that by doing that, you are giving the government more power.

Innocent people never get convicted?

Do you remember what happened in MA? (That is just one example).

What do you do with the people who don't comply with the alternative punishments you listed?

SHIPS!

Anchor them 12 miles out. If you can swim to land you go free. No guards, one food delivery per week.

You want to riot, go ahead….each ship has a charge on the hull.

This I like better than the initial options listed in the OP. No food deliveries. You're supposed to be able to teach a man to fish and he will eat forever. I'll donate some fishing poles.

i do agree we need to stop imprisonment for non-violent offenders as the first punishment they receive. If they don't comply with the alternative punishment, its off to prison.

At the same time we need to increase the prison sentences and bring back the death penalty for violent crimes, crimes against children, and rape.

This is a self correcting problem with 2 steps that wouldn't cost a dime, in fact it would likely save tons of money.

Decriminalize drugs and ban state funded rehabs and OD drugs, end all gun control and maximize stand your ground laws.

If you are a danger to society, you should be removed from it. If you are not, you should be free to live in it as you see fit.

The prison system is not the problem. The courts are the problem. Plenty of laws, plenty of enforcers. Too many liberal judges backed by liberal AGs.
The prison system is without a doubt a major part of the problem. Specifically private prisons that have a financial interest in keeping as many people jailed for as long as possible.

MA CO's make too much money from the cash they take from the families of inmates for "protection." When the families can't pay, the inmate goes on the "beat and rape" list.
Yes this happens. MA AG won't investigate because the CO's will have inmates killed by lifers of they testify.
The power of life and death of people always corrupts. Maybe not all, but enough to silence those that are not corrupt.

I've got an even better idea.

Take all of our violent criminals. Load em up in a pile of military transports. Hook them into some good airborne harnesses. Fly them over Russia and drop em out.

Sort of a reverse of what Castro did in the 70's. LOL. "Here. You take all of our dirtbags. Good luck!"

The problem with our prisons here in Massholia is that they're run by social workers. It wasn't always that way, but in the late 90s the social workers

You're right. The reason prison is bad is because of the big, mean corrections officers. It has nothing to do with the murdering, raping, kidnapping, drug selling, child molesting prisoners.

Cuba's closer.

Prisons should be run like boot camp, strict order and discipline but Libs would freak. All prisoners are evaluated and the super violent ones who should never roam the streets again are separated from general population. All others are evaluated for education level and skill level. If they can barely read and write they are required to attend classes until they can read, write, etc. at acceptable level to obtain employment when released. Then they move into Vocational type school or college where they will learn a trade, skill that will allow them to obtain employment when they are paroled. Behavior modification is key because most of these men have no ability to function in a free society. NO inmate should be released into the general public without a good chance of being a productive citizen.

CO's decide who is protected based on who pays. As long as the inmates don't touch the protected, they are allowed a certain illusion of control. Drugs and other contraband doesn't get in without the CO's letting it in.
It is entirely possible to make prisons relatively safe and controlled environments. But the inmates hate that. They prefer the illusion of control. There was a documentary on a warden who did just that. Inmates hated it.
Gen Pop justice wasn't a thing at his house.
