This is a civil asset forfeiture case being argued before SCOTUS.

In this case, the property in question was an automobile. There some indication that the Court will extend the 8th Amendment prohibition on excessive fines to the states. The Court previously ruled that "fines" includes both money and property. What has never been litigated is if the 8th extends to the states or is limited to the federal government.

If SCOTUS finds for Timbs, I wonder if it might form the basis for another case against bonded warehouses and other forms of firearms confiscation as practiced in MA?
