How, there's no guns in Australia

Three arrested after police car rammed and shots fired at officers in Sunbury - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Three people have been arrested after a police car was shot at then rammed as officers took shelter in a fast-food restaurant in Melbourne's north-west early this morning.

Police said the officers were patrolling near Horne Street in Sunbury about 3:15am when shots were fired at their car.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said they were on a routine patrol on a "normal night shift".

"They weren't in pursuit of anyone or reacting to anything, they were just going about their business and then came to realise they were under fire," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.

The officers then drove their car to a nearby McDonald's outlet where they took cover inside, which Assistant Commissioner Cornelius said was in keeping with police training.

While they were there, more shots were fired at the car, which was then rammed by a silver sedan.

The sedan then sped off from the scene, police said.

Police said a local sergeant was called to the scene after the first shots were fired, and more units were called for backup.

The three McDonald's employees and four officers were safely taken from the restaurant after the incident.

The restaurant was cordoned off by police tape as a large number of investigators examined the scene this morning.

A divisional van left in the car park was covered in what looked like bullet holes.

Assistant Commissioner Cornelius said the officers involved in the incident were "quite shaken" by what had happened.

"These types of incidents where police do find themselves targeted by individuals that do us harm … it's very concerning for us."

Two men were arrested as the area was searched by police and a third man was arrested later in the morning.

They were a 33-year-old homeless man, and two Sunbury men aged 18 and 26.

Police said they were not searching for anyone else in relation to the incident.

"They can expect some very serious criminal charges," Assistant Commissioner Cornelius said.

Earlier, another police officer was injured after being hit by an allegedly stolen car in Mont Albert, in Melbourne's east.

Officers were called to the area near Laing Street after getting reports of a suspicious vehicle.

When they found a white BMW sedan just after 1:00am, it reversed and then drove forward into the two police cars.

The car was boxed in by another police unit as it tried to reverse away.

he officers, then out of their cars, used pepper spray on the driver when the BMW started reversing away again.

The BMW hit a male Leading Senior Constable in the leg before driving off, police said.

The injured officer was taken to hospital.

Assistant Commissioner Cornelius said the two events were unrelated but represented a "worrying trend around a lack of respect for law and order".

"We're seeing increased levels of violence towards us," he said.

Police said they were still searching for the occupants of the BMW and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
