Residents of Dallas, Texas, suburbs sounded off at a local county meeting on their opposition to a proposed Islamic compound planned nearby, arguing the Muslim mega city would clash culturally with American values.
In one comment at the Collin County Commissioners Court on Monday, a Josephine resident criticized the 402-acre compound planned by the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC), which would feature a massive mosque, 1,000 new homes, a school and a shopping center, for separating Muslims who should be integrating into American society.
“My question is, why do they have to build a compound? Why not just build their mosque? Why not become our neighbors? Go to our schools,” the resident said. “I’m not saying that they have to give up their culture. What I’m saying is, why do they have to build a compound? What do they have to hide?”
