I acquired this Mauser Model 98 recently, and other than knowing it has an aftermarket rear sight added to it, and a sporterized stock, I really know nothing about it. Here's some pics... I'll let you guys tell me more :D

Can't wait to learn a lot...

For starters it was made in 1941 by Wilhelm-Gustloff-Werke, Weimar. Appears to be an original and not a RC Rework. Too bad about the stock and sights.. Has the barrel been cut and or front sight altered? I think the i under the serial number is an acceptance proof mark as is the Waffenamt

bcd is Gustloffwerke from 1941. Looks light a hunting/sporter set up; should shoot well with the Redfield style rear sight.

Jinx! The mark under the SN is the letter block 'i'. The Germans ran the SN to 9999, then again with 9999a, etc.

Here is a picture of the front sight. I don't believe anything has been cut or altered at that end. Kind of wish the stock was original, but the price was right (FREE!), so I can't complain [emoji2]

Thanks for the info... I had no clue about the origin of that rear sight, and did not realize that's what that (what appeared random) "i" was there for.

Also, it was set up for hunting years ago. The trigger is smooth as butter. The gun needed a lot of TLC and oiling, but the entire thing seems to function perfectly. Can't wait to get out and shoot it.

I even took the entire bolt apart - WITHOUT getting bit!

Curious about the "77" on the follower still...

Sorry looks like an aftermarket sight the originals weren't ramped hard to tell but looks like the barrel has been cut down as well you'll have to measure it to be sure. Kind of nullifies bringing it back to its original configuration. Still will make a great hunting rifle if the bore is good.

I'll get better pics this evening of the sights (these are just the pics I have on my phone already), and you can verify it better. Also, what length should the barrel be? I'll have to measure that this evening as well.

It's got the "dirty birds" which is a plus. looks also like the bolt was swapped out.
The bolt does have an odd finish to it. Not something I would assume to be original. Hell of a bastardized gun I have! Haha... I'll have to get a better picture of that too, I guess.

And yeah, I like the "dirty birds" on there (only because I like history)... And I like the fact that my 1941 German Mauser sits directly next to my 1945 Russian M44, in the safe. I wonder if they fight each other in there...

actually think barrel may still be fulllength, though crown looks "straight" think the barrel should be 24 or 26" if is, I may have a military stock I can give you (heavily sanded and bleached but full length) if do pursue bringing it back if barrel is still full size

barrel length 23.6 inches

I'd love to bring it back to stock - that was the plan to begin with... I've been out most of the night, but I'll measure it when I get in and let you know if I can use that stock. That'd be great :) Thanks

Definitely looks like aftermarket to me too, now that I've Googled some original front sights...

barrel looks right length, so looks like they removed the original night and replaced it. don't have my k98 sniper in front to tell exactly how hard would be to replace. bolt looks original, just jeweled. welp get front sight on, remove target sight ect and looks like will get back to original config, they stocks yours. even has a buttplate still

will need barrel band, front band and bayonet lug. came off my Mitchell mauser k98.
