How's the town? How are the schools? Any whacky bylaws? I believe it's green for LTCs, right? Anything else I need to know?

I already know that HSC and Devens are close.

And before the inevitable suggesting to move to NH - not an option at this time, unfortunately.

Smallish town...about 8,000 or so ppl.

Dual tax base (private vs business).

A good number of restaurants ranging from crap to damn good.

Ayer is a green town AFAIK...I live in Shirley.

I "think" you do have to get a couple reference letters for your interview with the CLEO...but I could be way wrong here.

There are a couple FFLs in the area to meet any of your out of state transfer needs. Sadly, Blue Northern closed down....so you'll have to travel for your buying needs. Littleton is the next town tot he east, so you can go visit @EddieCoyle's shop there.

    T-Stop in town (Fitchburg line).

Ayer Shirley schools are regionalized. I like the schools. No over the top liberal stupidity you see posted else where. Daughter has been in the district her whole life. Teachers really care and go above/beyond.

There is a small hospital in town...Nashoba Valley Medical Center. Had mixed results with them...I'd go to Leominster or Emmerson in Concord for serious stuff.

Acton Medical has a small office down 111 from the Ayer rotary.

Candlepin bowling on the same road (Harvard Lanes) as Acton Medical.

The Ayer Rail Trail is thee. Goes from Ayer all the way up to Nashua. Paved walking surface for walkers and bikes.

    What else you wanna know?

There is an FFL just over the line in Shirley. You can have a gun shipped into the state, (or out) for $25. Best rate I've heard of. He does business as
    Armadillo Arms.
If you play golf you have Red Tail and Shaker Hills nearby. Both are pricy but decent courses. If you're a hacker like me Settler's Crossing in Lunenburg is an OK little 9 holer.

Hey, leave my sister out of this!
A few of my buddies were at Deven before the 10th SF moved to Fort Carson, Colorado. One friend was from Mississippi and he liked the Ayer area so much he ended up moving out here when he got out.

Yes, and will gladly whack you sales tax on the value of the gun, so just keep that in mind... so it's probably more like a $50-100 (or more even) transfer when its done.

Ayer is so close to Littleton in the grand scheme of things its stupid not to just use a mill guy for transfers anyways.

Good luck finding a town in MA that doesn't require 2 (or more?) ref letters on the first application, regardless of what the law says. There are probably a handful that
don't do it, but it's entrenched legacy bullshit. I think the PDs do it to deter fly-by-night-er's from applying. (it's obstructionist crap, really).

Even Hollis NH requires reference letters.

You can keep Nashoba and Emerson Hospitals thank you very much. I know more FF/EMT's that agree with that statement.

Did you do your first app there? If so, then that's like, one. [laugh] I've heard of a few decent towns not requiring them, but the vast majority seem to.

The difference is you can brace them on it (because of the 14 day limit) and force the issue. Good luck doing that in MA. [laugh]

Well, he just shipped a handgun for me to and from Georgia for his $25 fee and $16 for shipping. Doesn't seem stupid to me.

    As does my brother.
They ask again at renewal time. I just pulled the letter and edited the date a couple of months ago.

If he wants to have some fun, Don't give them the letters. As the law is very clear in New Hampshire, That they can not make any more requirements than is allowed by the statute. Then take their butts to court when they deny him. Again in New Hampshire on this, the losing party pays all the expenses.

I lived there for about 10 years. Moved to Townsend. I lived over near the rotary. Its a pretty quiet town. Not much happened while I was there. Hope you like trains. They operate the yard 24/7 and always feel the need to wail on the horn! Sucks when you hit the crossing at the right time and have to wait 10 minutes for a freighter.

Big Scary Truck traffic though was getting annoying. As Devens has grown, so too has the truck traffic. They would roll past my house and make sure their Jake Breaks worked all the time.

Traffic can back up on 2A to the bridge in the afternoon when the cattle get off the train all at the same time.

Lots of good places to eat...yes. Tiny's, the new Italian place...

Great place for a hair cut - Pit Stop - Over by Devens :)

It was green when I was there 2 years ago. No letters or anything like that.

Bike trail is good. Starts right there, and you can go all the way to Nashua :)
