Teacher pay: Tenure or performance-based?

Performance should be given more weight but does not mean undermining tenure...

Competency should always be given the top most priority... !

Just my two cents worth... [wink]

My father is a public shcool teacher, and frankly one of the best teachers I've ever had. 8) Of course he's never recived any recognition for his abilities simply because of all the politics involved.

I think it's a good idea in theory: In my highschool there was one teacher who was a wet alcoholic. He'd show up sloppy drunk to school (or maybe he had a flask in his car) and the school would ask him to leave. Then we'd have a substitute for a month or two while he dried out and went to whatever the school sanctioned to help him with his problem. Then he'd be right back there, ready to start the cycle again. Moreover he wasn't much of a teacher, and a few cocktails didn't do him any favors. He's retired form that school, but he still does some subsittute work to supliment his income....he takes a taxi because his driver's licence is under suspention.

Still how much politics do you think would be added to performance rating? And in the end, would the teachers who the community thinks are "best" actully reap any benefits?

That's what I think is the issue. I had the same experience in High School. I had a business teacher that used to fall asleep at his desk and drool. He only had two more years to retire and he really didn't care, neither did the school district. That class was a complete waste for every student.

I also had the token alcoholic teacher. Always sweating up a storm in the middle of winter until he had the chance to spike up his coffee. Hopefully if the system is changed, these types of teachers will have to look else where for employment.

With all the teachers I have had to deal with, when Alan was in school. Performance based. Granted there are some really good teachers, but then again there were so many that should not have been teaching. Scarier yet was some of Alan's teachers, were some of the very same ones Glenn had in Elementary school. [shock]

Unions do NOT allow for recognition/award to the best . . . all are supposed to be treated equally within seniority. This sucks big ones!

When I first went to work for the PD as a Reserve PO, working my first shift I was told "it all counts for 20" (meaning don't look for trouble, make arrests, etc. as everyone gets a pension after 20 years no matter what you do/don't do). Totally foreign to me, as I've worked in industry all my life where tenure and seniority were never part of the picture.

My Wife was a teacher (2 states, 2 school systems) for 6 years, serving as a "traveling" speech therapist before heading into industry. Somehow I was almost roped into awarding a retiring teacher her plaque by the union (don't ask!), as nobody wanted to do it . . . she was a known alcoholic and they were happy to see her go.

At DEC our group had 2 alcoholic secretaries and we really couldn't do anything about them either . . . both went to detox to avoid HR actions against them, eventually one of them cleaned up her act. This was non-union.

I'd love to see teachers rewarded (salary increases) based on performance, but I never see it happening in the US.

... should be 70% performance and 30% tenure.

PASSING IS 90%! where at 90% you only get 5% increase

Thats how we are being appraised here... everybody has to work, be on time and always present, perform at the best of our ability, join trainings and seminars, must have good performance on the floor [excellent stats, etc.]...

Our oldest daughter and the rest of her second grade class suffered under a tenured teacher in her last year of retirement. No amount of complaining from all of the parents could change a thing.
1 MAJOR vote here for more Charter Schools or better yet, vouchers.

I am all for performance based salaries.

The sword does go both ways. We as a work force are becoming apathetic. Wanting high salaries, long vacations for little work. People for the most part in this country no longer take pride in what they do. They just want the paycheck and feel since they show up every day they should get raises.

I mean, what kind of example do we show our kids if we let the quality of our public education slide?

Performance. I had too many crapy teachers in high school making all the money, when the new, caring, younger teachers worked their butts off, and you could go to the mall at night and see them working another part time job because they couldnt afford it based on a new teacher's salary
