I'm taking a road south and will be wandering around with no set destinations with two other pals also in there 50's and I thought I would take a firearm or two with me. I MAY take a handgun but I know I will be taking a couple of long arms most likely a .22 rifle and a 20 gauge shotgun.
My question is can I do this legally. I can't imagine the long arms will be a problem but I'm not certain if I can take a handgun. I'm more than willing to keep locks on them with the ammo separate so can this be done legally without having to worry about it.
Is there a source of information out there that will make the answers easy to find? I would rather leave my firearms home if they are potential trouble but it would be nice to have them along just for the fun of it?
I don't expect any simple answers, but if anyone can share their knowledge I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys

Your assumptions aren't correct.

You need to read up carefully on FOPA, both the law and how it is implemented (or not) in places like NY & NJ in particular.

Here's a couple of links to read and the results of a search for "FOPA" in the title to start you off.

The NRA-ILA site has summaries of state laws, while it may not be all encompassing, it'll give you a good idea of where you'll have issues. They even have a FOPA writeup somewhere on there as well.

The link may be helpful in determining if you're allowed to possess the handgun/rifle in states you're intending to visit. As Len said, the mid-Atlantic states are dreadful, especially for handguns, but even the blue states around DC are pretty bad (e.g. Maryland).

It looks like my best bet is to just leave the firearms at home. No real reason to take them and I can't afford to have an attorney riding shotgun. We were just going to do a little plinking and such and that's sure not worth the potential heartache.
If I'm out of the house I'm carrying and on those very rare occasions that I'm not I feel like I'm half dressed. WTH, I could take a circuitous route but that would just be a PIA. Maybe just throw the take down .22 rifle in the trunk and not get pulled over or spill my guts if I do.. what a drag......

Down South my understanding is that many gun shops have rental ranges and they don't have many private clubs like we do in the Northeast. So you probably can do some shooting but indoors only and with their gear and no fear of NY/NJ.
