Went up to Kittery today to kill some time, and this followed me home. (Apologies for the scenery, the unfinished pantry has the the best lighting in the house for some reason :/ )

It looks like the stock has been sanded, and its missing the cleaning rod. With the exception of the bolt, every number I can find matches. My biggest concern is the slop in the upper handguard (I assume as a result of the sanding). These two pictures show just how much movement it has.

Suggestions for how to fix the slop? Just a shim under the front band or something else?

Nice looking rifle....nice to see kittery still has a few things come through. I have not been to kittery since 2005!

I've had luck there recently, between this and a Ruger 44 Carbine I bought previously. I'm curious; If you had to guess, how much do you think that this M38 sold for?

475$
I have only seen sporters out in the wild and they run $300ish usually with a old scope and dry rotted sling.

$225, $237 out the door. The NH transfer was apparently really jammed up, wait times nearing 2 hours, so i opted to pay the Maine sales tax

That's an excellent price, I think. You'd be hard pressed to find a standard M96 for that, and M38's usually go for $100-$200 higher.
