1. I am glad he is OK. Hon. Spec Bowers was a great advocate for our rights.
2. If anyone has good rules for prepping a home for self defense, please post a link. I cannot find the link that I had and I need to share with others. ( The one I am looking for includes how to set up lights in the bedroom and where to place the bed)

if you don't harden the exterior of your home to prevent an intruder from getting in then you should at least install an alarm system that will alert you of an intrusion and possibly trigger an automated police response. It's not very hard to harden a home and install an intrusion detection system.

How about just getting a dog like a German Shepherd, you take care of him and he'll take care of you.

"The Secure Home" by Skousen is a pretty good start.

I agree with lcstyle. Simple steps like ensuring that windows are locked as are the doors. Don't "hide" a key outside of the house under mats, or those fake rocks. If you are on vacation ensure someone you trust gets your mail. Lights and radio/tv on timers is also a good thing.j Motion sensor lights may light up when an animal goes by but is a good deterrent for criminals who seek the cover of night to do their deeds. An alarm system is also good. A German Shepherd is a wonderful idea! You'd be surprised how a big dogs bark serves to keep unfriendly persons away. Most important I think is to have a plan. If security is compromised everyone go to this room and x, y, z. If family members express an interest in firearms then encourage it. Not only could it mean quality time together but if the Mrs. gets into it you'll have an easier time convincing her you need that new LWRC....for bonding the family together of course.
Stay safe!

Listen you can't put iron bars in your windows and have 9 chains on your door. Unless you want steel doors steel frames and level 3 ballistic glass surrounding your moated and concrete walled compound. Someone is getting in if they really want to. Just get a nice pet that's big enough to wake you up if some one enters make sure you have a shot gun hand gun and ar at the ready. A high percentage of home invasions don't want to hurt you they just want your stuff. The thing you do not want is a home security system with video. Remember those cameras aren't recording sound and they might be high Def but that doesn't mean the angle is any good. They could end up f***in u in the end.

Wait, youre saying I dont want/need my cameras anymore? Excellent advice.

The article that I am looking for talked about where to place the bed in the bed room, how to position lights in the bed room with switches by the bed. It was a well written piece that went beyond the basics.
There are some mom's in Bedford that are worried and they have the basics.

I wouldn't how'd that work out for hernandez? Pretty good that they got him carrying a large glock into his own house right? Do what ever you want man just saying there's a lot of ways things can look on a camera and a lot of ways it can be spun I'd rather it be a he said she said with the other party being dead and my version is what happened. And what would you want a camera for if you every had to turn that over for a robbery u banging your wife isn't on there pass don't need the eye in the sky to feel safe

Well I think it's pretty obvious that you shouldn't film yourself committing felonies, but the fact that someone did it doesn't mean that security cameras are bad. Also probably not a great idea to aim a security camera at your bed or wherever else you intend to get amorous. The things you are pointing out are bad decisions, not indications that security cameras are inherently bad.

The Nest Dropcam records sound and image, has night vision, and can alert your phone if there's motion in defined area at defined times.

It also has a two way audio intercom feature, so you can talk to the person from your phone or computer.

Pros: no brainer setup and operation

cons: requires internet connection, requires a monthly subscription to the cloud service to use for video storage

Price, link, etc.?

Someone a while ago had posted one of the motion detectors from Home Depot that chimes and had it set up in their bedroom. Sounded like a good setup cheap. I tried finding the post but couldn't, maybe someone else knows the thread?

I had a thread awhile ago but I would recommend the Iris smart home system as a level of protection. It's from Lowes, very simple to setup and not overly expensive to provide a basic level of alarm/automation. The alarm can also trigger smart outlets if you want to turn on lights when the alarm is tripped etc.

This. I live just west of Boston, this winter, I had someone walk in my backdoor at about 11:00 PM, no idea who, my GSD got after him immediately and whoever it was left quickly.

If people approach either door of my house I know about it well before they get there.

He's trained to do security and a few other things, best home alarm you can buy IMO.

eta if you live in a rural area geese are fantastic alarms.
