Like the tittle says, I have exactly 500 to spend. I want something accurate like a savage and upgradable like a savage. Remingtons are just out of my price range and I think the savages proform better. Is there any other rifles I should look at that are moa out of the box and upgradeable? By upgradeable I mean stock, barrel, trigger modifications.

Try calling some of the dealers in your area - they're listed here. You might find a good used one with scope. If not, Cabela's has the Savage Axis on sale through Monday for $249 without scope.

I want it for 200 300yrd? Egg shoot and plate plinking out to 500. It's not going to be a hunter. The vanguard looks nice on the net but I don't like the feel of it. I was at bass pro today and looked at the edge and vanguard and didn't like the feel of either. I did look at a savage 111 that I liked but they didn't have it in 308.

Cabelas had Remington 700's for south of 500 on sale recently. I was looking at the stainless SPS with the detachable mag for 499.

I'd not buy the axis, unless it's just a hunter rifle for around here short ranges. I'd spring better money for the one with the accutrigger.....probably can find one on gunbroker south of 500.

There is a savage model 11fxp3 with scope new on gb now for 500, and a 11fns without the scope for 479.

Go on gun broker and post a wtb add here with what your looking for. Forget new in that range.

I picked up a Mossberg 800 in 308 for 275 a while back and put a Redfield 4-12x50 on it for 160 from SWFA Sample list. Thing shoots like a charm. So yes, my vote would be to buy used and if you don't find something you like, the Savage is your best bet for that dollar. Right now there are lots of folks hurting for money and unloading good values, if you have the cash, you have a good chance of getting a nice rifle for the buck.

You're target shooting and plinking. Why .308? Why not find a used remington 700 in .223 or .22-250? Super accurate with the right loads, and cheaper and easier to shoot. Reloading materials will be cheaper, and felt recoil will be less.
I saw a guy win an egg shoot a couple of years ago with an H&R single shot, heavy bbl .223. I'll bet that rig was less than $300 which leaves some money towards a scope.

I would like to stay with a Rem or a Savage because they are American made. That being said I think im leaning towards the savage. I have a dicks 700adl in 223 and am not a huge fan. The stock is crap, and accuracy is a pain to achieve. Also in the humidity of the northeast it keeps rusting, I have to keep the thing oiled like a pig. So far it has taken me 3 months of tinkering in the reloading room to find a combo the 700 likes. Nosler 55gr ballistic tip B/T with 23gr of H335 and rem 7 1/2 primers. With that combo im getting 1/2 to 3/4 moa, but it has taken around 600 tinkering rounds to find that load. I have a friend that has a Savage 11f with a 1/9 twist that was getting 1/2 moa out the box. So I guess this whole rant was more of one big question then anything, Are the 700's that picky for everyone or is it just my skill level? Also I would like to stay in calibers I already reload for. I have a 308 LR that i reload for now but that thing kills me in the pocket, I have a heavy trigger finger and burn through the reloads in it. thanks for all of the input guys I appreciate it. If anyone sees a good deal on a 700 or savage please let me know. When I find my new rifle I'll show you guys what I bought.
