First time poster here. Just had a question: I've been in the talks with a family member who lives out of state and wants to transfer a new handgun to me. I got confused in my own research on the transferring of firearms and ended up on the efa-10 form of the ma gun portal. My issue is that I was a dumb ass and submitted a registration for the firearm (it's brand new so no worries about being used in a crime etc.) without seller info, I did not think the form itself would go through without all info of both parties involved. Just want to know how to best rectify this problem seeing as the firearm in question is still out of state, no money has traded hands, and hasnt even been brought to an FFL down in their neck of the woods to be transferred to one up here. Thanks in advance.

IIRC (and I may not), ALL transfers from out-of-state MUST be accomplished through an FFL, who would then report the transaction.

Yeah, it's already messy.

Maybe not terminal, but definitely messy.
Is there a way I could cancel that initial registration?

IMO it’s much ado about nothing. Complete the deal and enjoy your new firearm. Just get it done before 10/23. No need to get hung up in that uncertainty.
Yeah but wouldn't doing it through an ffl create 2 registrations for the same firearm? I don't want the paperwork attached to my name to be messy

The EFA10 system is a mess anyway. I can’t see a duplicate registration for the same weapon being an issue. Just finish your transaction and have it shipped FFL to FFL as you said in your OP and enjoy. Just make sure that the receiving FFL knows it’s coming.

OP: Not a single solitary soul will ever "check" the EFA-10 you just submitted for completeness or accuracy, and they do not care a whit that you submitted it "incorrectly." Not a single solitary soul. Ever.

If the state ever has a legitimate reason to dig into that EFA-10, then you're already in significant trouble. If you know what I mean. At that point, a mis-filed EFA-10 will be the least of your problems.

So take your new gun whenever you get it, enjoy it responsibly, and satisfy yourself that you've done what the law requires. Kinda-sorta.

I wouldn’t sweat it. You filed the fa10 as the “buyer” and now the state knows you have it. Seems to me it’s registered in state now. The DAs office would be bankrupt quickly if they started chasing down FA10 mistakes. Also why I don’t sweat the color or exact barrel length when I do a transfer. I get it as close as I can, and make sure the serial is recorded.

Yes but it's literally too late now. Welcome to the club. Some of us have dozens or even hundreds of guns in that stupid f***ing database that we don't even own anymore.

A dupe is not really a big deal compared to most of the trashing most of our records have. [rofl]

Just keep remembering that "the database is not designed to be clean or correct" and it makes more sense to just ignore it.

Transfer it legally via an FFL, and don't even give the FA10 a second thought. I know that I don't give a crap what's in that system because it's a mess. Once it's in there it's always in there even if you sell or destroy the gun. So it's not a big deal that you would have a "duplicate" record.

Heck, I know people who have bought guns, then sold or traded them, then bought them back. So they have dupe FA10 s for the same gun legitimately.

there was an incident where an FFL got jammed up because buyer was brady delayed and stupidly registered the firearm same day before they were allowed to pick it up. ATF thought firearm was given to buyer regardless of background check status, but that was not the case. i don't think that applies here, since the EFA-10 date is before buyer's FFL will have possession of it.

It's an Hk p2000
Ya, out of state handgun has to go through an FFL, check with the FFL before shipping to them to make sure there is no roster issue.

And don't worry about the eFA10, that system is a mess, and as has been said, if they are ever looking then you have bigger issues.

Suppose I decide not to buy it in the end? Where does that leave me? Haha

I'm so confused why you'd register a gun you didn't even purchase but ignoring that fact... just do a proper transfer through an FFL and submit an eFA-10 deletion form if you're worried.
