they only charge a fee when they facilitate a transfer between a buyer and a seller.

If you buy from them, no fee is paid. But sales tax is paid.

Depending on the cost of the gun this can make a difference.

If you are buying a $3000 gun, then the almost $200 tax savings can more than make up for a $35 transfer fee.

If you are buying a $200 ruger 10/22, you are almost always worse off paying for a transfer because that $35 is a big part of the overall firearm's cost.
