Stripper + Laser = Problem for Officer

How old are you LenS??? are you going to tell me that you have never made a mistake?? or done something stupid in your life? Ever go to a strip club?? look at porn??? Oh of course not.. all of you are perfect. angelic. Pleeeeease........... he made a mistake.
Two words. Repeat after me: ON DUTY.

The LEO's in that town sit in the parking lot at closing to make sure it's cleared out without incident. The only reason it's a friggin media circus is because the broad was a celebrity type midget. I'm sick of all the cop bashing. All I'm saying is that there is more to this story that wasn't made public. Everyone automatically believes what's on the news and that is just ridiculous. So since that PD has such a wonderful reputation, it's not possible that maybe he pissed off the wrong people and they screwed him over after he had a lapse in judgement?? Is it not possible that they twisted his words to say he was lying and when he called them out on it said he was insubordinate?? Maybe he resigned because he was sick of dealing with with all the drama. Just saying...

Your version would be more believeable if yesterday's Herald didn't have a quote from the officer who resigned admitting to the mistake. I would be willing to lend more credence to your version being possible, if not for his quote in that newspaper. If he was completely innocent, he would have been better served to fight this, be returned to duty and move on to another department. Yeah, Stoughton PD is a s**thole and will probably always be a s**thole. I knew a couple of guys that I worked with in the Norfolk County Sheriff's Dept who were also Stoughton specials who nearly got caught up and blamed in a lot of the crap going on there in the 70's and early 80's. You are correct when you allude that Stoughton is willing to throw the innocent under the bus, but I'm not seeing that in this case. If your pal is innocent, he should have shut up and fought this properly.

Oh, and you completely lost credibility with me when you neg rep'd LenS merely because he does not agree with you. Hell, there are times when we all disagree with each other, but we don't neg rep people for honest differences in opinion.

I understand completely and I know you were not looking for makeup points. I just figured it was one of those quick, simple things to do.

Thanks John. But I wasn't looking for make-up points. I was trying to make the point to misbehaven that just because you disagree with someone or someone's post is no reason to act like a child and hit someone with neg rep points. Hell, most of us disagree with one another a fair amount of the time, but being gentlemen we are "free to disagree without being disagreeable"!

This is not that big of a deal and certainly not something to ruin my life and career over. I also think the officers I worked with are nothing but hypocritical fisters.

Richard! Should you be posting about this? You know you have the right to remain silent, right? [rofl]

(in full disclosure, the above quote was edited for comedic value)

Huh? Leaving his duty station to go see a porn star, while in uniform? Dereliction of duty is not a big deal?

That really isn't a big deal, in the grand scheme of things... stupid yes, career ending, no.

I think the chief was more p**sed off about the guy perjuring himself than anything else. A person who lies in that type of a job is a 110% liability in anything he
touches.

If you lie about even the most minor of infractions you are toast.

Even Civil Service will uphold the termination of an officer for the most minor offenses if they lied.

The best part is from the fox article: "Bennett was in uniform at the time of his visit to Club Alex's in Stoughton and was reported to authorities by at least five other officers, said Stoughton Police Chief Paul Shastany." I think it's hilarious that 5 other officers were there to see Bridget the Midget.

As I stated before and others have re-iterated many times . . . Lying is what does an officer in. If a defense attorney can point out that the officer lied in the past during cross, the officer's credibility is toast and MANY PERPS will walk. No PD can afford to have that happen to them.

Now for a motto from a very wise man, that's worth taking note of (and applies here).

To set the stage, I was a 19 yo Co-Op student working in the Commercial Power Division of Brockton Edison and thus was issued a company car out of the motor pool daily. My manager, a fabulous boss that I deeply respect to this day so many years later (he later went on to become President of Eastern Utilities Associates), took me aside and told me the following:

"When you are out there in a marked company car, YOU ARE THE COMPANY TO THE PUBLIC! Always remember that and let it be your guide to your behavior while driving and when interacting with the public!"

That has stood me well and something that I took very seriously.

When I was handed a badge many years later, I always made sure to abide by all laws while driving a cruiser as well as interacting with the public in uniform. Yes, I know that many officers blow lights/stop signs/blow by pedestrians in crosswalks on a regular basis (when no emergency exists) . . . it reflects poorly on them and their department, but I'm not their bosses so I just shake my head and keep on going. But whether a LEO, FF, EMT, delivery person, etc. if you use this as your guide you are very unlikely to ever face this sort of problem during your career.

So, maybe a culture of secrecy, protecting their own, covering up internal problems, and general opaqueness to the public is not always beneficial to all members of law enforcement. You are probably correct. There likely is more to the story than we mere commoners are allowed to see. Whose fault is that?

I have reached the point where the next Mass statie that tailgates me to get me to move over on the interstate is getting a call to 911, reporting a case of road rage (since they're now telling us that speeding and tailgating is road rage. [rolleyes].] I'll just report the plate and let the officer explain it to his supervisor.

I'd say that the lack of judgment exhibited by lying to his chief dwarfs his lack of judgment in posing with Bridget the Midget.

Got me out of a speeding ticket, once.

Did you report the LEO before he pulled you over?

I had an MSP bike trooper that kept weaving in and out of the travel lanes on 495 to try to prevent anyone from passing him.

No other officers were there, they found out after the fact and reported it to their supervisors. Apparently he didn't exactly keep it secret. Going there, not on a call, was a direct violation of the new chief's order,

Chief Shastany tells Snyder's Stoughton that he made it clear the day he came as to the way he wanted to handle regular liquor checks and calls to Club Alex's, a strip club on Route 138. "I told officers that no one goes in there alone. The appearance of impropriety IS impropriety. I want the calls there on the log, and I want officers like guided missiles---to do their job without stopping and ogling. I communicated that quite clearly to the members of the department. This officer went on his own, against three weeks of instruction on what his Chief wanted." Bennett evidently posed for a photo with the diminutive 3'9" porn star outside the club, in full police uniform, according to Shastany.

No. I sped up to get around traffic, then he pulled me over. When I expressed my displeasure at being tailgated, he gave me a ticket. I showed up and spoke to the Magistrate, who found me not responsible.

Now I pull over long before they get to me, even if I have to speed to get there. I've vowed to turn in the next one that does it to me, though.

Hmmm, so about what Bennett said to the Herald. He admitted to a mistake. What exactly was he referring to? Did the Herald quote the entire conversation with both questions & answers? NO... He said he made a mistake. Was he referring to the picture? the laser? lying? or all three? Is it possible he was just referring to having his picture taken in uniform?? Without the Herald printing everything that was said then we DON'T know. As i was saying, if you don't know, then don't assume.

and as far as neg rep's go, I don't give a rats a** how many green bars are under my name. And it's not that I disagreed with what LenS said. It was that I disapproved of the LEO bashing. Most of the time I think his posts are spot on. He is obviously much older than I am and has knowledge on a lot of subjects and I respect that. However, none of you know where I live, where I work or what I know. I might just know more than you think.

Oh and one more thing. LenS said "as gentlemen we are free to disagree".... well since I'm a woman, does that still apply??? [wink]

I believe that I prefaced my remarks with "if what was reported was correct". There is never a good reason to lie to an investigation commission, it is the major offense here. Remember that Clinton was impeached for lying not for his sexual activities. If Bennett did the other things he was accused of it showed such poor judgment that the man deserved punishment and retraining on ethics on the job (but probably less than firing/resignation).

FWIW, I had a high ranking officer lie to me and about me in front of other high ranking officers. Even though he was a very close friend, that lie destroyed the friendship between us. And this was over an agreement we had about a minor accommodation to avoid the perception of a conflict of interest when I joined the PD. It really hurt and I felt betrayed when he did this as he had an easy out with "yes we agreed to this some years ago, but need to change that as of now" . . . which would have fixed his problem with no hard feelings. Instead he chose to deny that we ever had the agreement and it shattered my faith in the man. So I can see myself in the Chief's shoes wrt this incident (again assuming he did lie to the chief).

I don't consider it "LEO bashing" . . . I just can't defend anyone under these circumstances whether he was a LEO, FF or a pizza delivery person. I did not tar and feather the entire department currently or in the past. I did point out some specific individuals that did things that were criminal acts and were convicted of same. Sorry if you think that someone who is an LEO "can do no wrong" and the blue wall should cover them regardless of what they do . . . we'll have to agree to disagree on that.

I don't profess to know the current "players" or anything more than what was published. I have no interest in trying to dig for more info. From your posts on this matter, it would be a fair guess that you are closely associated with the man and thus defending him. Tell you what, if he was wronged, he should see an attorney and sue the town/chief/PD/other officers/etc.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be sexiest in my remark. Please feel free to substitute "ladies" as appropriate where I used "gentlemen".
