CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A Cambridge clerk tackled an alleged thief as he attempted to rob the convenience store on Massachusetts Avenue Thursday afternoon.

Farida, 110 lbs, was working with one other woman when a man barged into the store with a bandanna covering his face and a gun in his hand, demanding money.

However heroic Farida’s actions might have been, police were not thrilled that she risked her life for the money in the register.

They said, ‘you want to take my job? This is not your job. You should not do it,’” Farida said.

I recall a story about a store clerk in Jamaica Plain, a year or two ago, clerk gave the robber what he wanted, then was shot and killed by the robber.
Cambridge police wants this woman to see if that was in store for her also ?
I wonder if, when Cambridge Police encounter a perpetrator with a weapon,
they wait to see if s/he is going to shoot them.

In video: Dumb crook puts down gun on counter to take cash, alert and smart clerk takes advantage of opportunity.

Who said it was about the money? Maybe it was about the armed a**h*** with the weapon, opportunity, and intent to kill her that she was defending herself against, and not the small amount of cash in the register?

The Cambridge MA police must think they are in Cambridge, England where the right of self-defense has been eliminated by the UK government.

Her choice, I wasn't there, you weren't there and the Cambridge Police were definitely not there. To fight or acquiesce is an individual choice based on situational awareness. While it is dangerous to stereotype I'm guessing that maybe Farida comes from a part of the world that tends to look at thievery and robbery in a different context, and where thieves and robbers are dealt with differently than here.

In past times, the police and the mayor would have given her a commendation.

She fought for her right to live, it's not up to the police officer to judge her. I am glad those strict laws on guns are working. I am sure the thief was a stand up citizen and was about to turn his life around with his legal and registered handgun. [rolleyes]

It sounds like she is not someone who was exposed to our local school systems or PC news so she has not been brain-washed into believing she should be a victim sheeple.

She should have called the police and waited for them to arrive. Self help is not encouraged in these situations. [rolleyes]

Looks like a store I've been in at Central Square..which always has something crazy going on. Lots of heroin addicts and drunks hanging out.

How dare us as individuals protect ourselves, shame on all of us thats what the police are there for. I'm finally waking up to the hope and change, the Police will save us all. [rolleyes] Only in a liberal state like this would the police question your right to defend yourself.

Good for her. As far as the cops comments, "you want my job", stupid. Some people just refuse to be victims and will do what ever it takes.

We don't abdicate our responsibility to protect ourselves and others just because there are police. In fact the courts have ruled that the police can't be held responsible if they fail to protect us.

I agree with the Cambridge Police. This is part of the new social contract that is taking hold in Cambridge and other forward-thinking places across America and the world.

When you are confronted by someone who threatens violence to take your property or dignity, you have to uphold your end of the contract by giving in. The attacker will, naturally, uphold his end of the contract by not inflicting undue harm. It's a type of compromise, a win-win for both parties. If you believe you need help, you should only seek that help from licensed and qualified professionals.

We've entered a brave new world, and you need to adapt. Self-reliance and self-respect are outmoded concepts; they need to be left back with the Neanderthals where they orginated.

(BTW, if you think any of the above reflects my true feelings, please adjust your sarcasm detector. Thank you.)

What does anyone expect of unionized cops?

For what it's worth, I think the statement has more to do with this happening in Cambridge than the person making the statement being a cop. You guys can disagree with me all you wish (and some of you will likely raise some good points in response) but this nanny state mentality is relatively less prevalent in jobs outside of the 128 belt.

I for one in general wish people would handle their problems on their own. It's this type of mentality that causes people to call the cops when junior refuses to get ready for school (yes, that was an actual call I've responded to before).

Yep, and I as a paramedic have been called to junior refusing to go to school , and also been called to school where junior was throwing a tantrum in...Cambridge's little sister Brookline. That's right: a cop, two paramedics, and an Engine dispatched to an 8 year old having a melt down. If I could saw these towns off around the borders and flush them I would be doing our nation a service.

You hit the nail on the head, my friend. The Nanny State Mentality.
