States With the Most Guns in 2012

Mar 21, 2012 7:46 PM EDT
The Daily Beast runs the numbers to find out where guns are most prevalent.

The Daily Beast wondered how the gun-ownership rates have changed since our 2010 report, in which we crunched the numbers to find out which states (including Washington, D.C.) are the most armed.

For our updated ranking, we considered state data from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System for the last 18 months. We divided the number of background checks by each state’s population to come up with our final ranking.

A point of caution: states are not consistent in reporting NICS data. Some use the system for background checks on purchases on the secondary market and others do not. Also, Kentucky implemented monthly NICS checks on concealed weapons, which inflates its numbers.

Like most statistics, these are flawed. You can purchase multiple guns on a single NICS check. So the number of checks is not equal to the number of guns.

That is very true.... and the data doesn't take into count the hundred and thousands of guns already owned and in the hands of the people of the states. However unless each and every citizen who owns a gun "decides" to report that information into national data base, we don't have a lot of places to derive that data from.
On wait..... isn't that what Obama wants to set up???? [rules]

Never mind................

I find it hard to believe that AZ, GA and FL are so low on the list.
But then again, NICS checks are only performed by FFL's.
I suspect many gun owners in those states freely purchased their guns from private individuals.

Doesn't KY run NICS checks on all carry permit holders monthly or something? Because their carry permit qualifies to present in lieu of a spot background check.

Those numbers are only NICS checks. I'd be curious to see total number of firearms, but then again, I don't want anybody to have that capability.

Look at the good in this people. According to FBI website:

-- Top 6 states with highest murders:
-- CA (44th in terms of gun ownership per above)
-- TX (32nd)
-- NY (48th)
-- PA (23rd)
-- MI (41st)
-- GA (38th)
-- Top 6 states with highest firearm murders:
-- CA (44th)
-- TX (32nd)
-- PA (23rd)
-- NY (48th)
-- LA (20th)
-- IL (18th)

What does this raw data mean? It means that there is no correlation between the number of firearms in circulation within a state and the violent crime rate. Looking at the bigger picture, violent crime generally has decreased significantly year over year since 2007, while the number of guns in circulation has significantly increased over the same period. Again, at worst, there is no correlation (although you possibly could say more guns = less violent crime). See the Kates/Mauser paper.

Usually whatever agency (s) that administers the CC permit system runs those checks themselves. They are LE and or state agencies with access to the same databases that NICS uses. NICS is just a "gateway" that exists to provide FFLs a means to know if info in those databases DQs the person in front of them or not. A cop sitting in his car can access the same data anytime he wants as can any CC permit issuing authority. Usually they just set up something automated to run CC holders through said databases and throw a flag if there has become a DQ'ing issue.
Pretty sure they are required to check them against NICS if the purpose is to have the CCL serve as a check substitute. KY does do that monthly, at least according to several articles:

If the monthly checks that Kentucky conducts on carry permit holders are excluded from the tally, NICS checks rose approximately 18 percent to approximately 14 million in 2011.

The adjusted NICS data were derived by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky, Iowa and Michigan for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases.
