Yesterday, Legislative Document 1347, the state park carry bill, passed in the state House by an 88 to 59 vote (roll call vote). LD 1347 is expected to be considered on the Senate floor as early as today.

Introduced by state Representative Richard Cebra (R-Naples), LD 1347 would eliminate the prohibition on concealed carry permit holders carrying a concealed firearm in state parks and historic sites and state property under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Safety and the Legislative Council.

A stripped-down version of a bill that originally sought to permit the carrying of concealed weapons in a number of outlawed locations--including the Maine State House--is moving toward enactment in Augusta. The Maine Senate today overwhelmingly endorsed LD 1347, which permits concealed weapons in state parks by those with a permit. Critics say the bill sends the wrong image of Maine to vacationers, but supporters point out that "concealed carry" is already allowed in Acadia National Park.
