ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A city alderman frustrated with the police response to rising crime called Tuesday on residents to arm themselves to protect their lives and property.

Alderman Charles Quincy Troupe said police are ineffective, outnumbered or don't care about the increase in crime in his north St. Louis ward. St. Louis has had 157 homicides in 2008, 33 more than last year at this time.

"The community has to be ready to defend itself, because it's clear the economy is going to get worse, and criminals are getting more bold," Troupe, 72, said Tuesday.

Troupe said that when he and residents approached a district police commander last year, they were told "there was nothing he could do to protect us and the community ... that he didn't have the manpower."

Police did not immediately return requests for comment. Chief Dan Isom told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he understands Troupe's frustration but doesn't support citizens arming themselves.

Carrying guns, he said, is not a "recipe for a less violent community."

Mayor Francis Slay wrote in his blog Tuesday that some of the most violent crimes in Troupe's ward are committed with guns stolen from law-abiding citizens.

He said Troupe could do more good urging residents to cooperate with investigating police officers, lending support for activities for children, and lobbying legislators to increase funding for jobs training and economic development.

Troupe's reaction to the spike in homicides is understandable, but his idea is not likely to be effective, said University of Missouri-St. Louis criminologist Richard Rosenfeld.

"Much of the problem is free and easy access to guns," Rosenfeld said. "This hope that by putting guns in the right hands will have an influence on criminals is a false hope. There's no evidence for that."

Neighborhood watch groups, and the hard work of helping to eradicate poverty and other social ills, are better crime-prevention tools, he said.

In one of the latest violent crimes in St. Louis, a man was shot dead Monday and an unarmed potential suspect in the killing was shot by police. The 45-year-old suspect had put his hand inside his coat and two officers, fearing for their safety, shot him. He was in stable condition.

Ah, the intellectually lazy. I think I will start tearing out the Armed Citizen column out of my American Rifleman and mailing them every month to this idiot savant.

what an idiot that Chief is. Has he not seen the footage on the news time and time again of the "dirt bags" in prison actually stating that they would be less likely to mug or attack someone or commit a B&E if they thought there was a good chance their victims were armed?

How can people (Chiefs of Police) be so narrow minded and stupid?

Nevermind... you dont have to answer that question as I already know the answer. [grin]

Quote University of Missouri-St. Louis criminologist Richard Rosenfeld:

"This hope that by putting guns in the right hands will have an influence on criminals is a false hope. There's no evidence for that."
Now those are definitely the words of a political hack trying to pass himself off as an expert on the criminal mind.

Can we send this poser a copy of More Guns, Less Crime? [rolleyes]

St. Louis Alderwoman Introduces ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban

What a difference a few years makes.

NEWTOWN, Conn – -(Ammoland.com)- In the wake of the 2016 elections, [in the wake huge losses by Democrat gun banners] the gun control battle will continue to shift to both the state and local levels.

As we have seen over the years when little success can be achieved in Washington, D.C., gun control activists move their focus and resources to the states and even more so to urban areas.
This week in St. Louis, Missouri, 28th Ward Alderwoman Lyda Krewson announced that she has filed a bill that would ban so-called “assault weapons” inside the city limits.
The bill would make it illegal within St. Louis for anyone to import, sell, manufacture, transfer or possess an “assault weapon.” If the bill were to pass, city residents would have 60 days after it becomes law to dispose of firearms that meet this description, or remove them from the city.
[h=3]Krewson, who is a candidate for mayor, seems willing to lead the confiscation of legally-owned property from her residents with the introduction of this bill.[/h]Fortunately, Missouri has one of the strongest preemption statutes in the country, so the city council needs to strongly consider the ramifications of passing this measure.
