Squirrel hunting probably my favorite

Got out with my son again today. He used his cz .17 hmr. Definitely keep it to head shots. But the advantage is the flat trajectory. From 20 yards to 75 yards is pretty much point of aim point of inpact.......unlike the 22lr.

He says you lose 80 percent of the head but keep 100 percent of the meat.

He got 4 this morning all head shots I got 1 lol

Squirrel hunting is going the way of deer hunting. I see more in urban areas and close to my house than I see in the deep woods.

When I hunting urban CT I could fill a wheelbarrow with them, in a few hours if I wanted to shoot them with a bow, back home in deep woods MA, I'd be lucky to see two on an 8 hour hunt.
I assume its because the city squirrels thrive around humans because theyre not being hunted like forest squirrels? Or are the city squirrels comfortable enough around people to move freely among them while forest squirrels have learned to avoid them?

I see more squirrels in work in Chelsea than I do walking the woods in the North Shore. Probably easier for them to find food in the city as well.

AFAIK rifles are a no go for eastern MA, but what about air rifles? Same? And if allowed, are air rifles adequate to take a squirrel?

The response I got from MA DFW after I inquired about using an air rifle, was that if a barrel was rifled, then it was classified as a rifle. This was pertaining to hunting coyote at night. YMMV

A lot easier for game to hide in the woods. You probably walk by a ton of deer and don’t realize it.

I was gonna say, all the time Ive spent walking in the woods, albeit on trails and basically in woods surrounded but civilization for the most part, Ive caught a glimpse of exactly one deer.
