Anyone happen to catch Mythbusters last night?
Pretty interesting one, they were trying to either prove or disprove the "myth" that if you are in water and someone is going to shoot you that you can simply dive down under water and be safe from the gun fire.
Interesting findings... At an angle of 23 degrees (probably about the same angle of impact if someone were firing at you from either the shore or a small boat and you were a couple of feet away from the boat) they couldn't get the rounds to even penetrate the ballistics gel at more than a couple of feet below the water surface, and with most guns/calibers couldn't even get the round in at all.
.223 when fired at the water the jacket stripped off the round and the entire round came apart and was completely useless.
30-06 Same thing the round just came apart and did no damage.
.50 surprisingly with this huge fast mother of all rounds did the SAME thing! Came apart and fell to the bottom of the pool and only made it about 3' into the water before breaking to pieces!
Before they had to move the test to the swimming pool they built a column of water about 10' tall and had the chunk of ballistics gel inside. They fired straight down with a 9mm handgun and got the bullet to fully penetrate the ballistics gel at about 7' I think, but below that the bullet was stopped inside the gel. They also fired with a 12ga slug which lodged itself inside the gel, but blew a huge chunk out of the back side of the gel, and shattered the column letting the water out.
Their conclusion: If someone were shooting at you at an angle of around 23 degrees, you would only have to swim down about 3' deep in the water to not be killed by even the big BMG 50!
Pretty cool to watch...
Note: the size of the block of ballistics gel was made to the FBI standards so that a round that fully penetrated the gel would be considered lethal. A round that got about half way through was about equivalent of just breaking the skin on a human.
