someone with a gun in the Burlington Mall

I graduated from UMass Amherst 2 years ago. Being such a liberal school, many of my facebook friends are antis. I figured I'd throw this news story up there just to tick some of them off but I was shocked. Not a single "what if it was a gun" comment yet.

Link to my status

You're lucky. I've been fighting a few of the most anti for the last couple hours. Glad I'm out sick today. There were a few comments of, well, even if it was a sword, it should be illegal! AYFK?

ETA: Immigrations and Customs Enforcement - WHAT THE HELL WERE THOSE POSs DOING THERE?

Surprised mall cops couldn't get a closeup on cam before calling for the national guard. They can probably read the date on someone's wristwatch with those cams, and no doubt loss prevention was in plainclothes and could get close enough... Only in MA can crazy over-reactions like this happen. I bet a bill banning novelty umbrellas comes out of this.

An Act to Prevent the Sale of Novelty Umbrellas That Look Like Swords that People Think Are Rifles

I still can't see how anyone would think that's a rifle. Obviously it looks like a sword but a rifle?

Not saying it's so, but if you look at the samurai handle as the rifle barrel, the bag has a certain shape that is more in line with a rifle stock. I think the population in Ma is blinded by fear, so they see scary things instead of unusual things.... The socialism of sight.

IN!

WTF with the ICE people being there? Did they think they were actually going to enforce a law or something?

ICE is literally like a parking lot over from the mall.
I was delivering further down middlesex tpke towards Network Drive. After I heard the first helicopter, I just figured it was another bank robbery. Then nobody answered my rings at the door of the school, followed by a 2nd and 3rd heli, and started thinking something else was up.

“I’d do it all over again if this happened tomorrow,” said Kent, who said about 40 officers responded to the scene from his department, surrounding departments, the State Police and federal agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

That there is best comment of all......I can see it now......

....."Hey Joey...take this and go wander around in the mall for a little while....we'll be over on the other side of town by the jewelry store waitin' for the show to start...." [hmmm]

I thought the same thing when I saw the photo. The bottom of the bag flares out like a stock, the handguard could pass for a front sight, then as pointed out, the handguard is a barrel. http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/IMG950446a.jpg. Kinda looks like a Cx4 Storm carbine, actually.

As for ICE, they're next door, and provide extra firepower. I know most of the frequent posters dislike federal agents, but in the event of an actual active shooter (something that malls are no stranger to) isn't the correct response to flood the damn place with as many good guys with guns as possible? Somebody thought they saw a rifle, then called police, who responded based on the presumption of an active shooter. When they found out what was really happening, they called it off. Sure it's hilarious in hindsight, but I can't really fault anybody here, except maybe the myopic guy who called it in.

Mary Poppins has a tactical anti-gravity assault umbrella. Check mate.

Down, but I am going to open carry my umbrella, you have to get them used to seeing this kind of thing, if you want it to be socially acceptable.

I saw one of those samurai umbrellas on the T last week. I thought, "Cool, that guy has a sword. Oh wait, it's just one of the those umbrellas from ThinkGeek."

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. If it wasn't for the report from Roanoke, VA of a similar incident in a free state, I would just chalk this up to MA stupidity, but apparently the stupid is strong in this country.

I say, group buy on those umbrellas and we stage a protest at the mall. 100 NESers with samurai umbrellas.

NES Open-Umbrella BBQ?

As long as the good guys who flood the place train together. Otherwise if real shooting happens, they just end up shooting each other while trying to shoot the bad guys.

NEMLEC is pretty good as far as multi-town SWAT goes. I would be more worried about the random State troopers running around without supervision.

This is suprising because ??? [thinking]

Hey, the officers made it home ok right ? [laugh]

I'm sure all of the responding officers were a little on edge after the Christmas-time Kohls robbery not too long ago (or too far away). You have to be full on retarded to walk into a mall with something resembling a firearm or sword and not expect to get a reaction of some type. Was it waaaaaaaaaay overboard ... yes but still guy is just dumb.

You do realize that stores in malls sell cheap samurai swords, right? I am not a mall rat so admittedly the last time I saw a shop selling one was 6 years ago in RI, but I can't imagine much has changed. They had knife stores in the lake grove mall in NY my entire childhood too.

Those are for profiling purposes, you purchase one there and the clerk hits a button mobilizing the national guard to come in and give you a hot lead enema.

I'm pretty sure that the mall in Marlboro and the one in N. Attleboro both have those stores in them.

I'm in training at a facility on mall road this week... work related... cant wait to hear the jokes about how everyone thought it was me when I get back to the office. [rolleyes]

They sell those at Disneyland. It looks nothing like a rifle of any kind.

I understand the reaction to the 911 call, what I don't understand is the two woman that spotted this was close enough to ID him could not tell that this was NOT a gun but a novelty umbrella. And if they were that close why did they call it a gun and not a sword?

Retards.
