My father used to have a spear gun that was more like a crossbow in theory, but it used rubber bands to shoot the spear. If you loaded it to full power and shot it out of the water it was hard to stay on your feet.

I like the Russian design rifle. They basically use the 5.45x39 cartridge with a dart projectile and the operator can reload what looks like a moon clip. I can only imagine the US underwater rifle.

Wasn't the pistol they developed in the 1960's supposed to shoot rocket fueled projectiles underwater? I remember seeing a pistol called the "Gyrojet" in an old Gun Digest growing up. I think it was 12mm.

The Gyrojet was not for water....it was for space, where recoil management is an issue. The projectile, being self-propelled, would not (in theory) push the shooter back.

Apparently the Gryojet does work underwater. Gyrojet planned a variant, the Lancejet, specifically for underwater use.
