I agree that one shouldn’t just go hog wild on crazy doodads. And the redi-catch, charging handle, muzzle device, safety, and trigger guard aren’t required changes. But they do all improve my AR… for me.

The muzzle device though, that was just because I liked it. To be honest. May switch to a pronged flash hider though.

I don't know why, but I really hate that trigger guard. It is all I can see now. I hate it.

I had one that I couldn’t decide whether I wanted a carbine tube and stock or rifle tube and stock.

One thing I like is a full capture buffer tube. Captures the retaining pin so the buffer tube won’t rotate. Therefore you don’t need to stake the castle nut.

There's a gimmicky thing you can buy for like under $20 that helps you install front takedown pins so the detent pins don't f***ing go flying across the room when you f*** it up. Probably best money i ever spent.
Or you can just learn how to do it.

I can do it in under 1min with my fingers, nothing else needed. Bring one to a meet and I will show you.

The whole kit is a good thing to have. It's only missing a few things

OP, stop trying to add more sh*t to the gun, buy some ammo and train.
I guess you missed this:

“Not actually going to add anything to my build most likely, this is just a discussion to see what other people value in a build besides the essentials.”

I hate the branding on it. But the shape makes gloved use nice.
One of the things I like about billet lowers. No need to install the trigger guard. Or make sure you have one for use with gloved hands. Since all the ones I've seen, and have, are setup that way. Maybe in FL having a flat trigger guard is OK. But anyplace where we get something even close to winter temperatures, that goes out the window.

I do wonder if the 'standard' trigger guard is OK for all but arctic gear level gloves. Since none of mine have that type, I'll probably never know.

Anything Monstrum. Add it all. All over.
You jokezzz but some of their stuff is solid like their 3X Ghost prism magnifier. Clearer and better easier eye box and eye relief than my older other Chinese magnifier, the Vortex. Monstrum has a cooler name anyway. The 3rd gen 'G3 Ghost', not the Ghost. [https://www.amazon.com/Monstrum-Ghost-Micro-Magnifier-Flip/dp/B0CW7D6QX6]
I just picked up another for one of my other builds cause its Prime Day sales. Can't flint enough @drgrant

Oh and get UTG irons lol.

Ahh. Definitely still need a castle nut.

I’d also still recommend staking the castle nut. Even with that tube, the nut could still come loose and the backplate could slide back, letting the takedown pin spring back out.

Staking the castle nut isn’t just about making sure the buffer tube is secure.

That's what I've always thought too.
And it's like an end stop for the tube so you don't go too far.
I had a basic one from when I started out. I chucked it and have always bought the little tabs style ones.

I’ve shot the normal flat trigger guard with a lot of gloves. It’s fine for most gloves, but even normal winter gloves are annoying with it. You don’t need to go full on Arctic gloves before it gets annoying.

Hope that's a 300 BLACKED home defense AR and you forgot your suppressor. If it's 5.56 I was told by NES "you'll blow your ear out, kid."

I keep noise-canceling headset on top of the armoir, right next to the gun. I updated my post to include the linear compensator, which helps a little.

I live in NC where suppressors are legal. I just don't shoot enough to justify the additional expense right now.

I always wondered how much a set of Bose quiet comforts will help protect your ears. Not enough to test it out with a 5.56 indoors lol

I’m sure they’d help a good bit. Especially for one engagement.

Anyone EVER broken one? Anyone?

Yup,

Though I wonder how many of those people posting their failures online were using chinesium ones. From my few years in an infantry arms room, I never saw one fail. We didn’t have a massive firing schedule, but the guns were not babied, that’s for sure.

My only concern would be the tit jamming up the fire control if it broke off but realistically it never has any force until you open up the lower. Correct?

Never witnessed it. I’ve only heard stories on the interwebs about it. So take it for whatever that is worth. The rifle will still function without the pin, but the rifle would be hard to disassemble. The concern is the metal that sheered off jamming up the trigger group in some way.

Maybe very unlikely, but its cheap peace of mind to get a decent one.

I keep it simple stupid for my set ups, in fact every AR I own is set up almost identical, my primary optics are Red Dot/Prisms.

I definitely don't train as often as I'd like but what I think helps with a slight lack of training I make up for it with familiarity.

My long range set up.is the only rifle I have that is much different than all my other go too SHTF rifles, with the long range set up I feel that I would have room to "Settle in" more before needing to take a shot which would make up for the different set up that I'm not as familiar with as all.my others.

Damn. I forgot about the JP scs. I 💚 that thing.
Triggertech triggers. Because you don't need locking trigger pins with them.

Good in ear electronic protection > over ears.

Should also mention a good trigger. Thats something that will make a difference in your shooting that a lot of accessories won’t.
Plenty of drop in trigger sets that are so much better than what comes in milspec LPK's it's not even funny. Lots of them are budget friendly these days too. IMO, gone are the days where you need to drop $200+ to get a good drop in trigger pack.
