4/19/19 Bullets & Vehicles (Instructors Dylan & Eric) is a 1-day class at $350 - a $100 premium over the usual $250 1-day cost to accommodate the added cost of 3 vehicles. One you bail/shoot from while stationary, one you shoot from in drive-by scenarios and one you shoot to bits.
The class had 10 participants (9 male/1 female), including 4 NYC Feds (3 Homeland Security and 1 “other”), a Navy doctor from Portsmouth, 1 Canadian and 4 Average Joes/Janes this time around.
The obligatory abbreviated intro & safety brief in the classroom took an hour and we went outside on the Upper Deck to do an hour of shooting drills to warm up (a way for the Instructors to see if everyone was up up snuff for an advanced course). All were safe and capable - I was pleased to see the Feds were good shots and safe shooters.
We simulated shooting from a vehicle using folding chairs at 7yd, rotating the chairs to fire as driver to the front, left, right and rear while seated. Then we sat in the front seats of a parked car shooting our the side windows at steel 10yd away as driver and passenger pairs, switching roles. Then we did the same while bailing to take cover by pairs behind the vehicle to engage steel.
Pairs were cycled into a drive-by shooting car where the front seat passenger shot steel as we drove by a few dozen targets simulating people on streets, in cars and in windows. Just to convince us shooting from a vehicle moving 5-10mph was a bad idea. The hits ranged from 0-5 out of 45rd fired for all shooters.
We got practice cutting seatbelts and breaking windows with various tools as both self-rescue and victim rescue. Then shot targets through the front window (from seated inside the vehicle) with FMJ and HP ammo to see how unpredictable hits were. Generally, 9mm deflect high left or right depending if you’re shooting from the driver of passenger side, respectively. Then we shot 22lr to 357mag from handguns, 22lr to 380win/338lapua from rifles, and birdshot/00 buckshot and slugs, into the engine block, doors and trunk of a car to assess penetration. Lesson learned was GTF out of a car if you can’t just drive away, and take cover behind the block or wheels. We shot out the tires, which did *not* cause the car to leap into the air in a ball of flame and roll into the ditch. The tires just hissed for minutes...
Great course; highly recommended. About 300rd ammo; 830am-500pm with an hour lunch and a few breaks.
