SHTF TRANSPORTATION

While Ripsaw is really nice, the MS1 version is unmanned only and the MS2 version is only a two-seater (with optional manned/unmanned control) I've wondered what it would be like to ride in an MS2 when someone was remote driving. Would make for an interesting escort / rescue:

Remotely piloted vehicle with 2 solders on board and able to remain focused on potential threats. And don't forget the remote pilot has a turret mounted weapon, upto an M-2 Machinegun available for additional protection.

The Howe & Howe Technology vehicle I think is better suited as an SHTF transport is actually the SR-X family. These rovers built for coal mines have 6 seats, handle a 45 degree incline in-line or off-axis, have massive 18" of ground clearance and are only 78" tall. Oh, and the body pannels are 1/8" steel plate over 2" steel tube frame.

They are base $90k and hand built in Maine. While the normal model has a governer at 21mph, they are capable of 42mph without it. Add doors (base model doesn't have doors) and a roof cargo rack and you can carry what you need over almost any terrain you'd need to.

If it ever got that bad you would need good boots to walk, a maintained bicycle to ride, and a fast and nimble truck to get away. If it's too conspicuous it will be targeted for theft or attack. A department store mountain bike would allow you to get around town to do your errands without too much attention. A Hyundi or Chevy SUV would be better than a Lexus or Beemer. You will be way too busy fighting people away 24/7 from a Hummer.

Yeah i think the MS-2 has a cool factor far above the SR-1, but I think you're right. The SR-1 could hold the whole family with room to spare for gear. One thing I'd like to know about it is the feul economy rating.

Yes, they don't list the fuel economy, but I suspect it has to be fairly good, not because of fuel but air quality. In the depths of a coal mine, air is precious and burning fuel means burning air.

Also agree that the MS-2 is a beautiful and cool piece of equipment, but at 700k and only 2 seats, it's not really practical either. Even SR-1's 90k price tag is too high for most people's budgets.

I'm not sure if this topic has been explored as of late.
I was wondering whats out there in the form of WSHTF transportation. Not interested in a "Sweet Ride" thread to show off your prized Ferrarri's or custom convertables w/suicide doors.More like Hoarses,"Mad Max"type vehicles, snow shoes, the old Buick even a homemade chopper w/sidecar.
Any pics?
Here's my vote: The Aton Impulse Viking. Off road, no road, and amphibious.

More at Jalopnik.

And for the winter months.

Blitz,

The Ripsaw MS1 is a Remote Operated Vehicle with no provisions for passangers. Not a good option for SHTF, but a wonderful little three-quarter million dollar toy.

The MS-2 has provisions for 2 passangers and local control, but it doesn't have a lot of internal space (mostly computers and robotics for remote pilot)

I'm a big fan of the 90k SR-1 family of vehicles from Howe and Howe Tech though. Designed for the coal mining industry, they're beautiful pieces of off-road equipment. (45 degree inclines on or tranverse axis, 14" minimum ground clearance, capable of reasonable speed and designed for field maintance in a mining facilty)
