I live Lynnfield/Peabody/Lynn lines...and my Hospital Group is Lahey (Peabody)

Title hopefully says it all .. Never had shoulder surgery but now I might, so I'm seeking a good doctor, versus getting referred to "basically anyone" by my (Tufts) insurance or Lahey doctor referral (basically a roll of the dice)...
My primary care doctor just retired and kind of left his patients in the care of Tufts and Lahey

Anyone had rotator cuff done and recommend a surgeon? Thanks in advance

I had my shoulder done by O'Holleran and then my knee done by Mattheos, both at Sports Medicine North. No complaints with either.

when it comes to getting cut open don't limit yourself to one area....the two best shoulder guys around are Dr Owen McConnville at south shore orthopedics in Hingham and Dr Joe Chase. My best friend owns his own physical therapy place and he has seen people come in after being butchered by lots of Doctors..the two doctors above are tops in the field...he has no affiliation with them either. I took his advice on my shoulder surgery 11 years ago...Look into it. Lot os people are going to give you recommendations so I figured I would chime in from someone( my friend) who sees a lot of doctors handiwork.

Sports Medicine North Peabody.

James D. O’Holleran, M.D.

Specialties:
Shoulder & Knee

Fellowship:
Advanced Shoulder Reconstruction & Sports Medicine

He did my shoulder 6 years ago, I have a family member that works in the or with many Orthopedic Specialists and this was who I was told to use. My repaired shoulder came back better than before the injury. And six years later is stronger and has a better range of motion than the shoulder that was not injured.

Also. Who ever you use, tell them you are a shooter. It can make a difference as to placement of anchors etc. if you need them.

Get a good recliner chair to sleep in for a while, and Ice will be your new best friend.

Get the script for post surgery PT recovery and do that first. I haven't been down this path but there are folks that claim PT/yoga type interventions work as well as surgery. You can always cut later.

The OP didn't give a lot of detail, but this is basically what I was going to say... make sure first that a little exercise won't take care of the problem.

Second Dr Owen McConville, experienced and one of the best.

However, since it’s hockey season, he told me come in later in the week cause mondays the high school and collage players stack the waiting room. [smile]

David Fehnel of Sports Medicine North. All he does is shoulders.

Dr David Fehnel does great work also. He has done my wifes shoulder a couple times over the last dozen or so years. She has had it repaired four times since 1999 the last two Dr Fehnel did. He did not have a lot left to work with from the first two times it was destroyed and repaired by dare I say lesser qualified doctors..

Commit to physical therapy, I’ve had surgery on both and have dislocated both since. PT is where it’s at... just don’t forget it’s not for a few months or two years, you have to commit for life, and it’s well worth it.

I had mine done in Worcester back in 2008. Haven't had any problems since. I work with several guys who injured theirs on the job as I did, one of which ended up having multiple surgeries and ended up being retired on a disability pension. I'll try to find out who did his and let you know. Like a fool, he went back to the guy I believe three times before moving onto another one. Several years later and he can't lift his arm over his head. A couple of others have also gone off our job early due to shoulder injuries. These are all guys under 50 years old. I hear the stories and count my blessings, however, I was also pretty diligent in going to PT and doing extra exercises at home.

As someone mentioned, the ice machine is the greatest invention ever. You'll most likely get one if you have surgery and will fall in love with it. I have two, one from my shoulder and the other when I had ACL surgery. They're great to have around. Good luck.

No Dr to reccommend. However, if you can keep the shoulder streched out before the surgery it will help. I had both shoulders with tears operated on with open insicions, not scopes, and the recovery was rough.

DO the physical therapy as directed. Don't over do it and keep doing it if it becomes easy. You need to keep the muscles and joint limber. The shoulder surgeries are the only ones that I don't have lingering problems from.

Good luck.

Had my rotator cuff repaired at Orthopedics New England in Natick by a Dr. Shah. It's been a couple years and it's as good as new with no issues whatsoever. Key is to do all of the PT required after the surgery. Slack on that an it will not heal right no matter how good the doctor is.

Another node to Dr. Alan Curtis at the Boston Sports & Shoulder Center. Did my shoulder in March (medium size tear and two bone spurs). I saw him in the HealthPoint office in Waltham.

No suggestions as to a surgeon, but just some advice. I had it done years ago. They told me to not drive for two weeks and to wear the sling 24/7. Being the a**h*** that I am, I drove the next day and took off the sling at nite. Didn't work, even with the PT. So, I just live with it. Don't do what I did. Jack.

I had shoulder surgery earlier this year. Wasn't a full blown rotator cuff but still needed work. If you haven;t been through PT yet, any good ortho (and probably your insurance company) is going to make you try at least 6 weeks of it. That being said, I went to Dr. Robert Patz in Norwood/ Milton. He was voted one of the best ortho Dr's in Boston Robert L. Patz Find Boston Doctors | Boston Magazine

I've also herad very good things about Tom Gill. I believe he was/ is the ortho for the Red Sox.

Not the rotator cuff, but I had my shoulder rebuilt after a grade 5 separation of the collarbone. Mark Lemos was my surgeon. Lahey, with office hours in Peabody.

Kevlar & cadaver ligaments; I have a bulletproof zombie shoulder now.
