So I have my fathers old shotgun that is rapidly becoming my trap gun. The case is an old sears roebuck sheepskin lined that he has had it in since the late 60s and has about had it. Although it is on great shape, it is just an old wingmaster. Nothing fancy or pricy. I want to take care of it since this is one of the only things my father gave me other than my last name.
What is a decent case that isn't $200+

The Plano that Mr Happy referenced is a good product. But if you are going to store it in a foam lined case, I'd put it in a sock first.

I don't personally like cases like the Plano for general use. Mainly because my guns get stored in a safe then get put in a case for transport. (by the way, no locked case is necessary for transport for a traditional tube fed shotgun, note that the law explicitly says large capacity rifle or shotgun. Not just rifle or shotgun. https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXX/Chapter140/Section131c)

I prefer cases like this.

i really wouldn't store a gun in a soft case, especially a cheap one. moisture being retained in the lining concerns me. you could open it one day and get a surprise. if you have to do it, wipe it down with a rust preventative of some kind every so often.

Get a cheap hard case. I bought a really nice Browning case for my O/U and had a cheap hard case from Dicks. Before the good case arrived at the range one AM a cup of coffee was spilled all over my case. Had it been the leather and cloth case it would have sucked. I think I used the good case 2 or 3 times.

This soft sided case is very well built and will last a long time. Not recommended for long term storage. I lightly spray oiled mine and it has served me well for over 25 years.

I would definitely go with a hard case, but that's a personal preference. For long term storage, why not get a small safe? You can get a 4 or 8 gun safe that would be better for storage, and they aren't super expensive.

Bigger concern is making sure the gun is well cleaned and oiled after use. Then also make sure the storage environment is cool and dry. That will go a long way in preventing corrosion buildup while in storage.

BTW, some may consider this overkill, but at the end of the season I clean my guns well. Then I only handle them with cotton gloves to prevent removal of the final oil film and also to prevent application of skin oil and other acidic secretions. Cotton gloves are cheap, and some of my guns are also irreplaceable heirlooms.

If I don't plan to shoot a gun for a while, I coat it in WD40 Specialist Corrosion Inhibitor. Its done very well in some competitive environmental tests. I used to use aviation preservation oil, but this is easier to apply.

I also bought a large roll of VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor) paper from ULine.

So I first wipe the gun down with preservative oil, then I wrap it in VCI paper, then I put it in a cloth sock and put it in the safe.

Don

p.s. VCI Paper is here.
