I have my grandfathers Sears and Roebuck side by side. It has this ding on the barrel as show in the pictures. Would this be safe to shoot or would it be prudent to have a gunsmith evaluate?

Man gramps is going to mad at you!

only problem with that is its pretty hard crease.
will it be a problem? It will probably collect wad plastic. should be a easy job for a smith with the tools. My dad was pretty good at getting dents out. Not the prettiest fixes but the shotgun was very utilitarian and was rough when he brought it home. He fixed a 1100 barrel before trading it in the bluing was already a mess so could not really tell.

Lol I think gramps put the ding there! I don’t want the thing to blow up in my face, It has major sentimental value. I’ll get it evaluated by a gunsmith. Has anyone here used Village Gunsmith in Dartmouth?

I'm guessing that gramps did not do that, then put it in the back of the closet, as it was "Busted." I'm sure that he shot it plenty, as it sits.

My dad would have driven plugs of increasing diameter to push it out, at least mostly, if he felt like it. That's also what he did in WWII, when a soldier brought a Bazooka, that had been dented like the shottie to his Ordnance truck.
a couple of weeks later, he got some info on the new "Secret Weapon Rocket Launcher" he'd just fixed. [laugh]

I'd take the drive out to Amherst and have Mike Orlen take a look.

Also, if choked full, I certainly would not be shooting steel out of it.

That a very common repair for a gunsmith.
I would have no problem shooting it with some light loads.

You need to weld a plug into the end of the barrel, stuff it full of heptanitrocubane then use a low brass shell (primer only) with the plastic removed as a detonator. Squeeze the trigger and 'inflate' the barrel driving the dent outwards. To finish, once you've mastered the use of your prosthetic arms (and perhaps torso), remove credit card from wallet and buy a new shotgun...and get that room refinished, it's a mess.

BTW, I am not officially a gunsmith.

I inherited a complete set every gauge tools that are to remove the dent from the inside. What gauge gun do you have a dent in?

I had a ding a bit worse than that about 5” from the muzzle on an old 12gauge SxS. I had forgotten about it altogether until I saw this thread last week. The gun has been at the back of the safe for eons. I shot a few rounds through it years back and the pattern from the dinged barrel was awful.
Last weekend I took a hacksaw and removed enough to get rid of the ding (which looked to me like the outside of the barrel was hit with a pellet from another gun at some point.) It took about an hour to cut it, trim, square it off with a 6” D/A sander, fine sand by hand, JB weld the hourglass and touch up with Birchwood Casey Super Blue. The only thing I wasn’t comfortable doing was to drill and tap for a new front sight. That is being done by a ‘smith in the next week or so. I’ll post pics when it’s done.

I have a hydraulic dent remover for a shotgun barrel.l If you want to give it a go , Where are you located

My granddad used to get a hammer, a piece of broom handle and his socket sets. There was always a socket, 2 if the dent was deep, with an outside diameter that was close enough. Oil things up and drive the socket past the dent, maybe with a little tapping around the edges of the dent while the socket was tight against the dent.

Well, you now have a good gun for Skeet, or woodcock.

Take the cut-off piece, and mount it, sticking out of the front grille of your car. I'm sure that people will be happy to move over to the right, when you want to pass. [rofl]

It’ll be my CAS gun for the once a year I actually shoot that. ;)
