I did the normal searching and got some info and I think I am leaning towards the Pocket Pro II. That said I have a question I could not find the answer to. I see in the reference material that the Pocket Pro original mentions dry fire exercises but the II makes no mention of it.

I want to get a timer just for running basic drills and the range, working on reaction time, overall shot string times etc. I am not even sure what I would use it for in terms of dry fire other than just simple reaction time from buzzer to draw and "click". Would the Pocket Pro II cover that scenario?

They have shot timer android apps. Might be worth looking into

I have thought about the smart phone option but I think I want a dedicated timer. I'll probably download one and try it before spending the cash though. Good suggestion.

The phone apps were pretty unreliable last time I checked. I have a pocket pro II and it works great. If you're looking for ways to use a timer in dry fire, Ben Stoeger's books will help.

I have used a few apps, the problem is that if you get a text/call it f's you up. Not to mention that it's really awkward reviewing your times and porn-hub opens up accidentally in-front of your friends [rofl] (speaking from experience here).

In dry fire you would use the Par time function. The pocket pro 2 does have this function, and it is easy to use.

I have an early Competition Electronics timer that I am very happy with. It has been very reliable for over 20 years with only one trip back to CE ($17 including shipping; great customer service). I had a similar problem with a PACT timer and they refused to even LOOK at it unless I agreed to pay an hourly fee.

I also have a Shotmaxx but have yet to use it with a real gun. I have been using it to time my runs with steel plates on my garage airsoft range. It is amazing how this timer picks up a signal from an airsoft gun. This timer has a boatload of functions which must be accessed though a small screen with four buttons. I find this tiresome but I am the original computer neanderthal.

i have a Pocket pro II which just quit on me after abut three years.

I sent a email to Competition Electronics. They will refurbish any Pocket Pro for 1/2 the current retail price. Even better they gave me a fix for mine that worked so I'll pass it on:

"Do you have the type which has the spring battery connectors (as apposed to the wired clip)? If so, it is possible that the springs have been bent out of position where they are no longer making contact with the battery. All you need to do is get a tool, such as needle nose plyers and pull the springs back into position.

Then you will need to do a reset. The reset is easy. First, make sure you have a fresh battery (When ever there is an interruption in power by dropping the timer causing a momentary loss in battery connection or turning the unit on with a low battery, that can corrupt the microprocessor). Then hold the side, start button in as you install the battery. On the display it will say it is initializing. When you see that release the button. That is the reset."

If that does not work, you can send it to us for repair. Just send it in with a note that includes your contact information. The turn around time is about a week, not including ship time.
