I went out shooting the other day with my girl friends step father. He is a democrat but still a avid marksman and hunter.
I always find it interesting to meet moderate left wingers/democrats who are still pro gun and my girlfriends step father is like the 3rd or 4th i have met in my life time.
All of the left wingers I grew up with were anti gun to the max and i include my family.
Is there anyone here that is a democrat but still pro gun?

To the op do you honestly care about gay marriage or pro choice or do you think we should have higher taxes or less government control over things like the fda. Not saying my views on them but they are hot button issues that not every liberal or conservative agrees with or disagrees with

There is a huge difference between a "classic liberal/Reagan Democrat/JFK Democrat" and what now calls itself "Progressive/Democrat". First group was mostly about getting the Government out of personal lives, free speech, etc. Now, it's about controlling you and me and anyone that "doesn't think the correct way".

I'm a registered Democrat, I don't mind admitting, although I'm ashamed of pretty much every candidate the dems have offered up for decades, and I normally vote repub or other like NM ex-gov Johnson for pres.

I'm pro-gun, duh, pro-death penalty for clear cut cases of murder, aggravated assault and rape, strong military, if you grab a cop's gun adios, stronger personal responsibility in schools from kids, if you need welfare you work for it unless utterly incapacitated, cut the federal budget, pro keystone pipeline, eliminate the dept of Ed and reduce EPA.

However, anybody can marry anybody they want, human 18 yrs +,higher taxes on the rich, I believe in freedom of choice for women although personally I'm pro-children, alternative energy and coal, stronger tax benefits for companies to manufacture in US, if Bruce wants to become Kaitlin on his own dime I don't care.

Much of my political philosophy is based on: you have a right to take a swing, but it has to end where my nose begins, and visa-versa.

What people don't understand is both political parties no longer represent the people...they represent the special interest groups that line their pockets. Aligning with one party or the other makes a person part of the problem.

Sure, lots of people, mostly from my fathers generation. As stated above, there is a marked difference between yesterdays democrats and todays. As for myself, I'm an "independent" on the registry. There are sides to both parties that I agree with and parts that I do not. I would assume that would also place me in the Kennedy democratic mindset also. The unfortunate part with my fathers generation is they will vote democrat no matter what.

Short side story. When Obamas first election came up, I went to the polls and got the republican ballot. One pink amongst a sea of blue ones. Love how they do that here. Anyway, the poll worker (ie old bag) kind of gave me a sideways bit of lip. I returned the favor with a more direct line of shut it. When the second election came about, I wasn't the only lifeboat on the waters with a pinky and the same worker was somewhat subdued. I asked, how it worked out for him. He looked quite sad.

good point. too often people vote for a party based on tradition/past party affiliation/habit without actually examining the issues. also, a candidates personality and "personal connection" to the voter can trump all rhyme or reason, and get people to vote against their own interest! fear is also a factor. even though voting is confidential, I wonder how many people vote like their friends, just to be like their friends.

yes, your 'other' party is the statist party. class warfare much? you just outed yourself as a redistributive socialist.

Why is more than half of what any free man earns a reasonable tax rate when others are paid to not work?

Removing one word in the thread title makes me chuckle to myself.

see above. agreed.

maybe you didn't understand what I said about welfare. no work, no help, unless utterly incapacitated. injured combat vets get whatever they need. if you put your life on the line for your country, the world is your oyster.

people don't get rich in a vacuum, don't be naive! yes, most of them work hard, but so does everybody else. most are reasonably smart, so are most people. they deserve to be rich, if they work, are lucky, whatever, but we all pay our fair share. I have to admit my prejudice against fat cats like bankers, people who do help they economy, but help themselves to your money while sitting on their butts. I'm torn because I can't stand fed regulations either, as there are few smart ones.

Ridley had some good points until the high tax thing as well.

If you eliminate the welfare state, which would happen if people were held accountable.

Also dumping the dept of ed and the Church of the EPA. This saves a bit and is a good start.

My question is. If you are cutting things from the Fed gov. Why the hell do you want more money? What purpose would there be? Only to punish the "lucky"?

Tax is a percentage so the rich already do pay more taxes. That and their tax rates are higher.

As an engineer, I do more sitting on my backside than busting it -> Should I pay a higher percentage of my income because I don't have a physically demanding job?

Think about your stance critically. Is it about a 'fair share' or punishment for wrongs against society (real or imagined)?

A fair share would be a set percentage with no additions, subtractions, exemptions or other sweat heart deals. Even better would be a stipulation that any change in tax percentage or tariffs would be imposed for two years on the states voting for the increase before those who opposed.

What's "rich" to you? Give me a dollar level where it goes from "hard working american" to "greedy fat cat" for you?

How much of what someone else earns do you feel the government is entitled to? What rate should they pay?

Are you aware of the current portion of the tax burden that is paid by the top 10% of earners compared to what percentage of the income they make?

http://www.wsj.com/articles/top-20-of-earners-pay-84-of-income-tax-1428674384

If the "top 5th" make 51% of the income, and pay 84% of the taxes already... What level of taxation does "fair share" turn into "punishment and envy"?

Meh. There are anti-gun Republicans, too.

Lately everything's a la Carte wrt what people do or don't support.

Liked all of ridleymans points, also except for the higher taxes for the rich.

I'm not rich, I just happen to have a great job, that I worked my ass off to get. Tactical entries on my resume to wind up where I am, and its afford me a comfortable living. At the current tax brackets I pay a disgusting amount of federal taxes... I certainly don't feel the need to pay more, as the .gov has plenty of money already. They need to stop spending it like a drunk sailor.

Stop the welfare for the "gimmedats" and the "dindu nuffins" and it would save us stupid amounts of money. Ever look at the budget for social and human services for the state of Mass? Last time I checked, I think it was about half the states budget.

Legalize drugs, free up the DEA's 2 billion dollar budget and however much is spent to incarcerate drug offenders.

OP, I have lived and traveled all over the US. Metropolitan areas aside, firearms cuts across party lines. I know many democrats in FL, WI, GA, CA that are very much into firearms.

I had a family member, who is a staunch Republican, ask me what I needed my rifles for. He asked, "so you can shoot the cops?"

/facepalm ^ 3

And what's their stance when their party leaders want another gun ban? I certainly wouldn't support a party that wants to deprive me of or substantially limit my ability to enjoy my personal belongings.

So who do you vote for then? Do you know who is responsible for the Hughes amendment, Crime Control Act, who created the ATF, etc. etc.???
