NORTHBRIDGE -- Police say someone went too far early Saturday by shooting a BB gun into a street-gathering of two dozen young people, striking four victims, at least two in the face.

As they search for the shooter, police say one victim was shot in the side of the face and one on the forehead, though none suffered broken skin or bleeding.

"This could have resulted in severe injuries," Lt. Walter Warchol said. "A couple inches lower, it could have hit an eye."

Many of the 20 to 25 young people gathered in the town's Rockdale section fled when officers responded about 2 a.m. after a woman alerted a cruiser, police said.

Officers rounded up 14 men and woman, ages 17 to 21, questioned them and searched for a BB gun, but came up empty, police said. The 14 people will be summoned to Uxbridge District Court on charges of unlawful assembly and disturbing the peace.

While Northbridge Police typically respond to vandalism involving BB guns, cases targeting people are rare, Warchol said.

The problem is anyone 18 years or older can buy BB guns in Massachusetts, without having to seek any permits like regular gun users, Warchol said. The weapons keep getting stronger, too, he said.

"With the strict gun laws in Massachusetts, I find it kind of surprising," he said.

Oh for crying out loud. I guess they're running out of regulations to slap on our guns so they're branching out.

Better warn the craft ladies- their hot glue guns are next!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sheesh, can't find the shooters, so why not charge the victims instead?

I swear, this state is going into the toilet almost as fast as Lousiana. Maybe not as spectacularly, but as surely.

A few years ago some kids in Plymouth were shooting at cars on the highway with BB guns. Walmart decided that since the kids bought the BBs at their store they'd be 'good neighbors' and stop selling BBs and BB guns.

Last I knew you needed an FID to buy BBs and/or BB guns.

Nope, not in Massachusetts. I bought a BB gun in Wallyworld about 5-6 years ago and never had to show anything.

The law says you have to be 18 to buy. However, many stores and police chiefs have made their own rules. In Northborough for example the Police chief requires the store to see an LTC for a pellet pistol. Not legal, but the Chief can make life miserable for the store.

There is no law that says a gun store can't show you a gun and allow you to touch it if you do not have a license in MA, but every store seems to do that. Why? Because they know they can not make a sale if you don't have a license, so why let someone that can't buy handle valuable merchandise?

Two laws govern pellet guns in MA.

MGL C 269 Sections 12A and 12B. I'll leave it to you if you want to go read them. Basically it's about sale and posession by a minor.

Also see Commonwealth vs. Rhodes (1983) that ruled that ONLY C 269 S 12B applies to the posession of an air pistol. ie. the firearm laws do not apply.

Also, air pistols can't be sold in Marlboro - city ordinance. So go to Walmart in Hudson approximately 200 yards from the border.
