Seven Year Old Suffolk Boy Suspended For Bringing Toy Gun On Bus

A seven year old Suffolk student is in big trouble for brandishing a toy gun while on his school bus.

According to Suffolk police, the seven year old was riding bus 194 down Shoulders Hill Road, on his way to Florence Bowser Elementary, when the other students noticed he had a gun.

The bus driver pulled the bus over and took the first graders backpack which had the gun inside. Police identified it as a toy gun, but the penalties for having a toy weapon, can be as severe as having the real thing.

Carrying a toy gun in a backpack in such a way that it becomes visible to others == "brandishing" ? Why not assault with a dangerous weapon? After all, some kid might have been afraid. Sheeeeeesh! Can't we just call it what it really is: thoughtcrime.

George Orwell made only a few mistakes in his book 1984.

He had no idea that a computer would look like a TV (he called it a TV).

He got the year wrong. Hint, it's not in the future, it's in the PAST, but after 1984.

Totally disgusting [evil]

Zero Tolerance rules suck. If there was an instance where the perpetrator becomes a victim, it is in a situation like this. Given the way audit trails are maintained on people these days, I can realistically forsee a situation where the boy might not get into college because he was suspended in the first grade for brandishing a weapon.

So few school adminstrators have any common sense these days. So many are either total bleeding hearts or ex-jock coaches with less than competent leadership skills.

When cops started coming into schools on a regular basis, that really was a tacit concession by the school authorities that they couldn't control the situation anymore, like the case where the cops came and handcuffed a seven year old girl.

Now, this may seem strange, but I'm in favor of Police presence in the schools. The students need to know he's an LEO, whether he's in uniform or not is irrelevant. I've noticed that school administrators and teachers have such a disconnect with the students that I think the LEO would be someone for the students to talk to. A "normal" person so to say.

After hearing enough of the coverage of school shootings, I've noticed a trend. The students saw it coming, the faculty/staff did NOT. WHY? In the Columbine case, the 2 perps referred to themselves as "Trenchcoat Mafia" and were subjected to abuse by the "Jocks". Why did Faculty/Staff not put an end to it? Why did they call the "Trenchcoat Mafia" bit "Cute" and put it in the yearbook? It was kind of obvious that there was a problem brewing. An LEO in the school would've likely put an end to the harrassment of the 2, and likely kept the situation from ever happening. This is something the Faculty/Staff was apparently unwilling to do.

ETA - I also am not in favor of "Zero Tolerance". Let the LEO's do their job, the way they know how to.

I'll tell you first hand that in the middle and high schools, the kids run the show. Kids will wander the halls and when confronted, will tell the teacher or whoever challenges them FU. The school administration needs to instill discipline themselves. The reason the police are in the schools now, is because the situation has gotten so out of hand, they can't/won't handle it anymore. Now they're at the point that they want the police to be the "bad guy". It's no different than the calls we get like "I need an officer because my 10 year old refuses to go to shcool."

One elementary school principal called to report a threat that was made on the bus. A 7 year old had an argument with another 7 year old. The first one "threatened" to blow up the other kid with a bazooka.
Report this to the police? Yup, he did.

BTW: On Cub Scout meeting days, we'd wear our uniforms to school with our jacknives hooked on our belts all day!

And Jon, that is NOT what I think the LEOs should be in the schools for.

I'm a definite advocate of terminating the employment (firing) of any principal that is unable to maintain order in his/her school.

The LEOs should be there for the students to access, since it's become quite clear that school faculty/staff are so grossly incompetent that the students do NOT want to go to them.

Our schools are PROOF that Liberalism is a failure. School Faculties and Administrators are mostly Liberals, though there are exceptions. They constantly refuse to maintain order. Kind of "Stop that, or I'll tell you to stop again".

I know a few of the teachers I had in Jr High School and High School that have quit in disgust of the system.

And I'm getting sick of doing their job of giving these students a real education. I've been training men and women in their late teens/early 20's for years. THe big difference is get me mad at you, and I'll lighten your wallet for you. 8)

My ex-gf is a teacher. Kids are smart and the ACLU or a lawyer is all the more willing to take on anything for fame and money.

I saw it when I was in HS 15 yrs ago. The normal kids who do the picking on are the popular ones, and if told their son is a brat the parent would be 'oh he most certainly is not! Its so and so problems, I mean, just look at the way he dresses!'

Far fetched as it may seem, it is the truth. My own mother thought the best friends for me were the ones who dressed all nice and sharp. But when my world went to hell in about the span of 1 day, all the so called 'friends' my own mother wanted me to have and were 'good kids' vanished. Gone. The kids that were the 'hoodlums' called me everyday making sure I was ok, if I needed anything.

Society in general has become so vein that they don't judge the quality of a man by the color of their skin but the label on their clothes.

Skald, you're just a little older than my son and daughter, and I too have seen much of the same. I was into it a LOT with their high school, and the Superintendent (he usually saw it my way). An irony was my son having a close friend for several years, before we found out he's my second cousin. And, he wasn't one of the popular kids, either.

Yup, my son got singled out for little trouble, branded as a redneck, since he wasn't a pothead, and given a general ration of CRAP. The joke is now on them, since he's an OIF vet, as an NCO, no less.

I will mention the best get-even I got on that school. They're required (by law) to let the National Guard recruiter in one day per year. That's all he ever got, until he and I put a "recruiter" in the school every DAY. James got asked to talk to a few classes, in his BDU's, as a National Guardsman, while still a student there. I remember hearing that a few of the other students were shocked to see him walk back into the classroom, in proper BDU's, and of course, his usual good manners. 8)

I knew the Principal of the school personally, as well as the teachers. Since I moved into the town right as I started High School, I got the XL Hungrymans ration of BS from the kids. They did it in front of teachers who couldn't do anything really. The kids parents would grief them to the point of rendering discpline meaningless. Only justice/discpline on proper manners was when one of these 'jocks' pushed a 'freak' to far and gets the living hell beat out of him.

Example is mine. Mind you, this harrassment was ongoing for 3 years, almost daily. Ever since I was a freshman I knew I wanted to shoot and knew if I got busted for A&B I'd lose it so I tried to stay out of fights just to make sure I don't lose said right.

But, even I can be pushed to far. So, after excusing and apologizing the home coming queen who I was trying to get with me to go out on a date (we had the same gym class). I proceeded a rather colorful and graphic portrayal of me putting my foot down and demanding the idiot throw the first punch.

Now, you must understand that my grief happened a lot in gym, so this happened in gym class with my teacher probably 15 ft from me.

My demands were very simple. Throw the first punch or leave me alone. I also graphically mentioned something about it being the only one and using his bloody stump of a head for a mop and the teacher is not going to stop me.

Kid got wise and knew he was seriously in trouble when the teacher said "I didn't hear anything." Turned around and walked away.

Needless to say, no fight and he left me alone after that.

Discipline starts at home. It comes with respect and self respect. If the parents aren't going to teach it, the schools should.

Yeah, I think my son could relate to that. After they found out he was in the Guard, while still in school, he didn't catch much flak from the other students. The Liberal teachers, though, were another matter.
