Senators Want To Know Why WNBA Players Make Less Money Than NBA Stars

Sens. Jacky Rosen and Amy Klobuchar apparently don’t know anything about how sports work.

Rosen and Klobuchar, who is running for President, sent a letter to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation on Thursday asking for a hearing on why female athletes are paid less than men.

This has been in the news a ton ever since the World Cup got underway, and that was storyline was prominently featured in the letter. I get it. I understand why we’re talking about it, even if the women aren’t actually underpaid. However, there’s a line of the letter referencing basketball that is simply laugh-out-loud funny. (RELATED: Kevin Durant Will Sign With The Brooklyn Nets For $164 Million, Kyrie Irving Will Get $141 Million)

“Last year in the Women’s National Basketball Association, the maximum veteran player salary was $115,500, while the men in the National Basketball Association earned a minimum salary of $582,180,” the letter read.

Yes, that’s an actual sentence in a letter from two sitting members of the Senate. I wish was I was making this up, but I’m not.

We have actual elected officials who want to know why WNBA players aren’t getting the same kind of cash as LeBron James.

Here’s a really simple answer for all of you. The NBA’s TV deal is worth $24 billion dollars. $24 billion! That’s the kind of cash that is simply mind-boggling.

Now, the senators might assume the WNBA has a lucrative TV deal. There must be plenty of people just dying to watch a bunch of travels, jump balls and missed layups, right?

In 2013, the WNBA signed an extension with ESPN that paid out $12 million a year. There are bench players in the NBA making more money than the entire WNBA is in TV revenue.

Why? It’s shockingly simple. The NBA sells out arenas and is a global brand. That’s the reason why players are getting paid insane amounts of cash.

The WNBA just isn’t. I’m not knocking the women for choosing basketball as a career, but let’s not pretend like they’re out here producing the same kind of product or cash flow. They’re just not.

The reality of the situation the WNBA all-star team would get obliterated by any good high school boys team. You could put the women’s Olympic team on the court against any top-25 high school boys team in America, and they’d lose by 50. It would be insanely ugly.

Yet, senators are confused as to why they’re not paid like they’re in the NBA? Give me a break.

When the WNBA scores a TV deal worth $24 billion and sells out arenas all over the place, then we can talk about upping their salaries.

Until then, trying to compare them to the NBA is outrageous. If you’re not smart enough to understand why NBA players are paid the way they are and their female counterparts are paid less, then you have no business being in any position of leadership

But on the other hand, anyone interested in joining a pick up hoop league if the two senators have any success? I'm guessing we could make a few bucks?!

Politicians being politicians. They are riding the stupid wave.

These are the people we elect. They focus their efforts on BS like this for personal gain rather than serving this country.

Remind me again, why arent they all unpaid part time?

Or maybe paid, but minimum wage?

Quick Google search tells me that the NBA does $7.4B in yearly revenues while the WNBA does $60M.

I think that there should be mandatory economics classes for anyone to be elected to public office. If I have to take a class to exercise my 2A rights, why shouldn’t these morons have to take Econ classes?!

If they could get good looking WNBA players and have them play in bikinis I bet they could get a better TV contract.

    I should run for Senate.

Little League should be abolished. Nobody is little in our country! It should be called Big League and kids should receive a minimum wage for participating. Everyone needs to get something from those pesky taxpayers!

    It's not about math.

    It's about "equity."

Now, follow along: Men play basketball; women play basketball. Therefore, both men and women play basketball. Therefore they have "equal work," and deserve equal pay.

Since everyone can agree that persons that do the same job deserve the same pay, the fact that they don't indicates that there's something that needs doing.

"And the trees are all kept equal, by hatchet, axe, and saw."

This. This is literally how they think. It's all about "equal pay for equal work."

The work is of course not equal as men generate a bigger economic surplus than women which in this case is at a ratio of more than 100 to 1.

But try and get their hamsters to accept that. Not happening.

    Not bad.

The product of that work is designed to be entertainment for the masses. If there are less fans spending money on the UNWT that is not anyone else's fault. The product of their work guides their pay.

We all know US jai alai and football are corrupt, anyway. Look at the strikes of the 80's. Now we have Indian casinos instead.

Let's make every sport equal by abolishing winning! Winning is such a trumpism!

Teams are not winning, they are enjoying the movement equally.

I would support NBA players being paid the same as WNBA players....the same day the Senate had to sign up for Obama Care...right before they have to join the private sector because of term limits....and I am able to buy FA milsups.

Kinda like when I point out that most of those in the NBA earning that stupid money don't exactly look like me.

You guys are missing the obvious answer here. The NBA should have to give half their revenue to the WNBA so they can make the same money!

    It's not math skills.

It's reality recognition skills, or probably more appropriately: reality acknowledgement skills.

Lately I've seen a number of articles about why it is that lefties are just constantly in a state of argument with reality.

The War On Nature | The Z Blog

Since the French Revolution, the enduring feature of all radical movements, has been a war on nature. Whether the radical movement calls itself communism, Marxism, libertarianism, socialism or Progressivism, at its root is a war on nature. The radical looks around at the world and says it should not be this way. He then conjures a system that will bring society back to what he imagines to be the ideal. The fact that the people are unwilling to go along with this new order is proof of its validity.

For the longest time, perhaps due to the shadow of Christianity, the radicals justified their new conception of society as getting back to the natural order. Rousseau imagined his world as being at odds with man’s nature. “Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains” was the rallying cry of radical movements throughout the 19th century, because they assumed that the present order was a corruption of the natural order. Getting back to that natural order would set men free.

Of course, this conviction justified the slaughter of millions. After all, to fight against the imposition of the new order was to fight against freedom. The reactionary was worse than a slave owner, he was the tool of the slave owner, an enemy of the people who deserved no mercy. If the natural end of human society is a return to the natural order, it must therefore mean the elimination of those who oppose the natural order. Marxism turned mass murder into salvation, a blood sacrifice to the new man.

In the current age, arguing that radicalism is rooted in man’s nature is no longer possible, as science now tells us otherwise. We know that man has never been what the radicals imagine, so the radicals have been forced to take a different tact. Instead of arguing that their cause is a return to man’s natural condition, they now argue that nature is imaginary, an optical illusion, socially constructed by the people benefiting from the current order. Nature is now the chains of man.

    ---------------------------------

It's always lefties who are making crazy arguments about shit like " why don't WNBA players make as much as players in the NBA" - and " why don't women get equal pay with men?".

This whole subject is coming up - and has now been spewed out on the nightly news at least a couple of times this week in regards to the women's soccer team - because they apparently won the world championship ( if it wasn't for the nightly news I seriously wouldn't have even known this - and I also wouldn't have cared).

If they're going to force thru paying the women soccer players and basketball players the same as the men - where is the money going to come from? That's the question you need to ask yourself.

And if you're like me and REALLY want this whole leftist experiment to die a horrible death - you might start thinking that maybe we should encourage these two idiots in Congress to push thru some sort of equal pay bill - that forcibly redistributes money from major league men's sports - to women's sports. ESPN is a cesspool of lefties now - and men's sports in general seems to be full of a lot of leftist d-bags, so this would be yet another avenue where we could set the lefties against themselves. Plus the shitstorm might turn a lot of men away from watching sports altogether and then maybe pay more attention to the country falling apart around them.

Either way - I don't really give a crap if the Senators start going after this shit - as long as it doesn't lead to more money coming out of my pocket thru some sort of "fund crappy women's sports" tax hike.
