Senate GOP Says Gun Control to Take Backseat to Debt Crisis

At least some common sense is coming out in Washington. I don't know how this will effect the debate at the state level however.

If you click on the above link, it brings you to page not found. However, on that same page, you can find the link to the article about the Obama plans on gun control.

As I posted on another forum earlier:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said today that we would just have to wait and see what VP Biden proposes, "...then make our own proposals."

This is why we *will* end up with more gun control.

When you start at the status quo and negotiate compromise, you always move towards what the other guy wants, and away from your own ideals.

To save, or possibly even regain some gun rights, we must make our own proposals:
- Repeal the federal Gun Free School Zones Act of 1990
- Repeal the post-'86 machine gun ban
- Repeal the Gun Control Act of 1968
- Repeal the National Firearms Act of 1934
- Eliminate the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives (ATF), and distribute any remaining functions between the Treasury Department and FBI

There. Let's start with that proposal, then negotiate.

So where do we begin? I am in favor of all those (especially the Hugues Admendment of '86)

You really pointed out the root of the problem. Doing any of the things you listed would take actual small government conservatives. The current Republican party is not actually a party of small government and constitutional liberties, so they are just incapable of proposing any of those things.

"Conservatives" have been fighting a losing battle in this country for a long time because they've been A) Stupid , and B) kept selling out.

Unless that changes things are just going to continue to get worse.

So where do we begin?

In the Senate, Rand Paul is the only one likely to introduce such measures.

In the House, possibly Justin Amash, perhaps one or two others.

Anyone who would introduce such measures has already been shut out by GOP leadership and stripped of any meaningful committee assignments.
