I know I have to ship to an FFL in the State of the person who is purchasing the rifle. Possibly transfer to an FFL here and then to the FFL there. I haven't talked to the FFL there yet to see if he will accept a rifle from a lowly civilian.

My question is after I have shipped it out of MA how does the FA-10 people know I no longer own the rifle? Do I do another FA-10 and list the out-of-state FFL as the new owner of the rifle?

How does that work?

There is no registration or permit required to own a handgun or rifle in the State that the rifle is going to.

How do I get it off my list?

You don't which is one of many reasons the system is useless.

That database has to look like an STD transmission chart in a Florida retirement community since viagra hit the market. [laugh]

You're kidding right? Right? So I'm on the hook if they use this rifle in an Aurora style shooting in a week or two? Damn this system is so ****ed up! What genius thought this shit up?

Actually, I think you're only on the hook if YOU do an Aurora style shooting.

Not kidding.

As I have often said, there is no such thing as a "harmless database," least of all a poorly managed, error ridden one managed by fools.

Thankfully many or most of the FA-1 and "Blue Card" records prior to 1998 have been lost, destroyed (by water damage) or not been entered into the current database. So if grandpas old war trophies happen to come out of hibernation, they're pretty much anonymous, until they get transferred through an FFL or FA-10. Once that happens, they'll go into the system presumably forever.

Willie, are you asking specifically about a long gun leaving Mass and going to.........??
If it's a bordering state to the North, you can drive the gun right to an FFL in the state of the buyer and only pay a transfer fee to one FFL.

QFT.

1. The FFL will have it listed in the bound book as an incoming transfer from you.
2. The FFL may agree to supply you with a receipt for your records.

Surprise...

That was the impression I was under too, but it turns out that I mis-understood what Bill Pickett (Jason Guida's predecessor) told me back in early 1998. I recently asked Bill for more info and he assured me that most blue cards (I did not ask what the "start date" was) were indeed input to the current system. Bill says that about 30K blue cards were destroyed due to a water leak in the old MSP HQ.

[thinking]

It's going South to a very nice Gentleman. I talked to the FFL and he said he would accept shipment from me. To the best of my knowledge that is perfectly legal to do. It'll be shipped FedEx over night. If I'm wrong someone please correct me. I won't do well in a Federal prison. I'm old and my knees are shot so running from a gang rape is not an option for me.

1 makes me feel better, 2 not so much. "MAY AGREE"? Oh Boy! I just don't want anyone showing up on my front steps wanting to seize guns that I don't have. That's gonna be nasty in this State.

As long as the package goes to an FFL, and he accepts it, you're fine.

Demand a reciept, period. It only costs them postage.

Hell I'll pay the doggone postage for the piece of mind.

Another thing I just through of.... include an SASE, with a note saying to please put a receipt in it and send it to you... that should get the message across. :)

NO need to ship overnight/air for long guns. FedEx and UPS will accept long guns for ground shipment . . . a lot cheaper.

He's going on a hunt and wants the rifle for the hunt. He's paying the shipping. And the customer is always right! So overnight it is! And it's gone. He got a damn good hunting rifle.
