If you own firearms, it's a good idea to carry an insurance policy specifically for gun owners, especially in a state like Mass, NY or NJ where cops and prosecutors have shown that victims are likely to be charged for defending themselves. These policies are not a guarantee that you will remain unscathed after a shooting, but you are better off if you have one.
However, if you find yourself with a gun drawn and are thinking about potential repercussions if you have to use it, you likely should not have it drawn.
YMMV, but the only reason I would ever use a firearm for defense is if I was sure that the target was trying to kill me or a family member, and the last thing going through my mind would be the ramifications.
If failure to act means the death of yourself or a loved one, who cares what the fall out is.
